Went out to take the F150 to the store and noticed it leaking something near the rear. I have no idea what it is and need some answers.

Its pitch black, sick so can't smell anything, and as far as burning hands, I dodnt notice anything but the brake fluids been in there a while

Was this truck rust proofed in the aftermarket when new? I have found that very hot weather causes some leakage of the rustproofing material years after it was applied. Just a thought. FWIW--Oldtommy

Probably the used oil jugs you forgot about. Fell over in the trunk and are leaking thru the rust holes.

You're going to need to look at your truck, and see if there are any hoses that are near that location on your truck. I can't tell by looking at the picture if that leaf spring mounting point is in front of the axle, or behind it, towards the rear of the truck.

Regardless, the chances of that being axle fluid coming from that location is remote. How would it even get there?

If there's a brake line that runs near that portion of the bed/frame, then that is a possibility, but you're going to need to climb under there, and look around to find the origin of the fluid.

Is there anything in the bed of the truck?

BC.

I would enlist the help of a friend/assistant and have them press the brake pedal while you look at the leak...fresh fluid (more leakage) and it is likely the brake lines or hoses. While 2004 is early to rust through, a few hard winters will cause all sorts of failures from salt on the road...

If the pedal is soft, or sinks while it is being pressed, then it is certainly a brake problem...

Consider yourself lucky...I discovered a line failure when the pedal went to the floor while driving home in rush hour traffic...

I cannot believe it but you're right. Had an (almost) empty jug in my bed that was leaking through. I feel slightly dumb now.....

If you'd have done this and spilled the oil before it rusted there wouldn't be a problem, the oil would keep it from rusting out and would still be inside...

I've been practicing "Remote Viewing".
