Not really soap scum; more like shaving cream scum. I have long sought after a chemical solution to this problem without harming the metal blades themselves. The soap scum seems to be most prevalent on the plastic portion of the blades. The blades in question are Schick Hydro 5s and the scummy shaving cream is Edge Gel. What sayeth y'all?

I get a month from either Schick or Wal-Mart five blade razors. I use shower gel rather than foam and rinse and wipe on a bath towel. Could probably do more than a month with this, but a month is easier to remember. Making sure it's completely dry is the important thing. Shower gel works great and is far less messy than foam.

After you shave and before the scum dries, take a Q-tip and wipe the blades clean. Keeps them cleaner and sharper much longer. You're welcome.

I shave in the shower and spray rinse the blades when i;m done, no build up what so ever.

I just use my finger nails. Running my nail atop and with the pattern of the blades, under hot and high-flow water, seems to do the trick for me.

I'm growing a beard for the first time in my life, so I expect my blades to last a lot longer now. Heck, I usually got 6+ months out of them, shaving weekly to biweekly, as was.

Same here, works like a charm and has for years.

I'd start with a new shave cream I'm thinking the edge gel is the problem. I'd try and have converted to old school Barbasol foam shave cream I seem to get much cleaner results and longer blade life. Worst but tightest shave is with Duluth Trading shave cream terrible to keep blade clean but awesome shave results.
