OK, so before getting a new router I thought i'd give my old WRT54GL a try with Tomato, so I installed Tomato today...

I increased the transmit power to 60 from default 42.

I know that QOS can increase performance...

when I go there, i don't understand what to do at all...
do i just enable QoS and that's it? or do i need to change any other settings?

Our list of equipment is:
2 iphones
2 laptops (wirless connection)
1 blu ray player hard wired to the router for movie streaming

1. How can I set it in such a way that web browsing is at fastest?
2. How can I set it that (when needed) the blu ray player (hard connection to router) gets priority? (is that possible at all?)

this is what my qos screen looks like (in disabled mode right now)...

also: which channel would be the best?
i have chosen channel 4 now, which seems not populated at all (per tomato scan)...
1,6 and 11 seems they have several IPs on it...
am i using the correct channel?

You know this is a motor oil site right?
Sorry I can't help.
Does anyone have any idea what he is talking about?
I have built computers and I have helped design a few software programs. I am lost here.

I thought this was about real tomatoes. NJ Ramapo tomatoes are the best. None other can touch them.

yeah i know and this whole section COMPUTERS is meant for questions about COMPUTERS !!!!!

do YOU see that there are 3517 threads and 43769 posts ONLY about COMPUTERS in this section???

do you see that there are other sections for FOOD GUNS PHOTOS etc ????

You don't think a question on how to juice a specific kind of router might be out of the realm of a computer section of an automotive site?
Forgive me if I am wrong.
If I were you, I might try a networking site. Just my opinion.
Good luck.

And did it help in any way? AFAIK, soon after I did something similar on my WRT54G, the transmitter radio died.

QoS doesn't make things faster. It helps prioritize packets so that when you're maxing out your allowable bandwidth, some packets get priority over others.

If I remember correctly, you need to go into the "Classification" tab and then assign a specific class to a given traffic type (web, P2P, voip, etc.)

1, 6, and 11 are what's considered "non-overlapping" channels and should therefore help minimize interference, or at least that's how it was back in the day. I'm not sure if this still holds true in today's age of 802.11 g/n and 5 GHz spectrum...

NO - because: questions that were far more complex than mine have been discussed and answered numerous times prior to this in this section.

you don't think 3000+ topics in this section were just about how to turn on a laptop and connect a printer, do you?

So why bother responding?

+1

To the OP: Don't know much about Tomato but you can also prioritize QoS per VLAN. For example if you had separate networks set up for laptops, iOS devices and your streaming device. You could prioritize the network going to the streaming device so that it always had the highest service level. Then, you could use the Internet on your other networks with the confidence that it would not interrupt your video stream.

[edit] well ok assuming Tomato supports that. I personally normally look for a router that supports DD-WRT. But maybe I should try out Tomato.

To suggest trying a networking site. It may just be me but for Oil and general. automotive questions I come here. For specifics I go to sites that are dedicated to those questions. I thought it was simple good advice. My bad I guess.

BTW, all those links posted above are from other router / networking sites so I don't think I was too far off base with the idea.

Have a great day. I'll stay away from your computer section from now on.

QoS is for specifying which applications or ports receive priority over others. This is the ensure, for example, that your internet phone doesn't get choked into oblivion when you're downloading a bunch of torrents.

Turning on QoS will essentially accomplish nothing. You'll have to set up which programs or communications ports are important and which are not. I have the port over which all of my torrent downloads take place as the lowest priority and things like VOIP as highest.

You do have a point there. For very specific firmware questions, I do agree that scouring a dedicated Tomato forum may prove the best resource. However, we've got folks from all walks of life here on BITOG, not just oil gurus, so it doesn't hurt to start here.

Personally, I have asked many totally non-oil related questions here on BITOG and have always received some good guidance.

There's an oil section here?

You really need to stay in the oil section.

Yeah looks good. Did you test your speeds? Use 10% off max upload. I use 11. You then have to assign the devices by priority under the Classification tab. Suggest you assign by MAC addresses, DHCP will change local IP's every so often. Test, make changes, etc.

Heres my config after years of messing with it. My Skype cordless is crystal clear, the boys say xbox live is perfect, no glitches, and I always get comments from the GB router folks asking "why is your network faster than mine on that old router?".
