Leamington man loses $150,000 in Nigerian scam

John Rempel said he quit his truck driving job, lost friends, borrowed money and crossed the globe in pursuit of a non-existent inheritance, after he was contacted by e-mail in what is known as a Nigerian 419 scam.

It's sad that someone lost all his money and money of relatives to those scammers. Why anyone don't understand this: "If it's too good to be true ..."

Well, unfortunately, there are *really* lots of ignorant people out there that just "don't get it".

Why? I guess the answer lies on the fact that human greed is the root of all evil, esp. given the rather sad economic situation out there....

I think an Aussie lady got strung out to the tune of $400k.

Saw it on the news, and they played her like a game fish. Get a bit, let a little out, reel in some more, let a little out.

Letters on Nigerian Govt letterhead, letters signed by George Bush...etc.

there are some old geezers that are taken advantage of like this. like the old guy who bought 10 cars in one month and they stole money from his house.

That's different from someone, like the guy in this thread, who is of sound mind (well, maybe not...) that can not spot these things as scams.

Great now the Government is going to institute licenses to use the Internet and you will have to take a surfing test to show you can avoid SPAM, Spyware and SCAMS!

I'm not so harsh. Having elder care issues with my mother, and seeing her mind at the level of a nine-year-old, and seeing credit card companies (and others) take advantage of her via phone solicitations, and the door-to-door salesmen, makes me a little sensitive to gullible people.

I get a email every second day from the wife, daughter etc of an african king, diplomat, prince and so on, who has been murdered, send them so much money to leave their counrty and they will split there millions with you..

These scammers prey on greed and gullibility. While I don't shed any tears for the victims - life's a [censored] when you're stupid - I would love to see these scammers hung up by their ballbearings and have their oil drained.

Sad that P.T. Barnum's saying still works today-but I agree that some people need to be skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true-see Madoff, Bernie-even reputable companies lost their hides to him.

Greedy, greedy, greedy. Get what you deserve, loser.
Midas wanted everything he touched to turn to gold, and it did, even his daughter turned to solid gold.
You get punished for your greed.
