I dumped out a mix of Amsoil TSO (
1) The piston slap improved. It is quieter and much shorter in duration than the thin ASL. Although its been a while since I had the TSO in (a couple months) IIRC, it is quieter and shorter than the TSO was. I honestly can't remember if it is quieter than the XL I ran but at that point in the vehicle's life I can never remember it having any slap in warmer temps, say above 60F.
2) The oil pressure rises very fast on start-up and runs slightly higher at all temperatures than the ASL. The ASL/TSO/XL rose slightly faster, I'd say a fraction of a second. Nothing to be worried or excited about either way. The slightly (maybe a couple psi) higher oil PSI was expected although not needed. Not a plus or minus IMO.
3) The engine seems to run ever so slightly smoother, or, it could just be me paying more attention to it. Either way, it doesn't run any rougher than it did before.
Its only been a week so I have no MPG results and don't plan on being able to make any comparisons for at least a couple of months or more. I do plan on running a UOA at 7,500 miles or so. If it is not spectular I will likely try Amsoil HDD or one of their 10w30 oils. If the UOA is great, I may just go with this stuff because it is so easy to get at Wal-mart and is under $5 a quart when purchased in the 5qt jug.
Please don't take this as me knocking ASL or TSO. I've used them in other vehicles with great results. As mentioned, my last UOA with TSO was great. I just need a thicker oil and will likely try Amsoil's other offerings on this vehicle at some point. I did not change because of wear or MPG, just noise. The 10 quarts of TSO I have left will go into my other vehicle with no reservations at all.
