SolusOS (Linux)

Being mainly a Linux user for years and have run Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc., found that SolusOS floats my boat.

Have installed the 64 bit version on both my Netbook and Laptop and like what I see.

Had Linux Mint on both and had the install format and use the existing Linux partition.

Used the File Manager to backup my pictures, documents, etc., to an external drive before installation. Too checked it so it showed hidden files and backup the .thunderbird & .mozilla files.

Looks great! It seems to be Debian Stable, dressed up and patched with some tweaks and newer packages. The really nice thing about this type of project is that it appears to be 100% upstream (Debian) compatible; meaning that if these SolusOS people disappear from the face of the earth you can still use all of your data with a Debian install.

I really like the idea of these projects taking a well-tested, established base like Debian or Red Hat and customizing it for specific purposes like a desktop computer, but remaining binary-compatible to mitigate against any of these projects failing. Seems like the best of all worlds! Good luck to them.

Your case is a perfect example of why these Debian Stable-based OS's are not perfect for everyone: Your ATI video card requires drivers that are fairly new, and the kernel and existing ATI driver (as with the rest of the OS) on Debian Stable are *way* behind the times. The proprietary ATI drivers need a newer version of the X.org graphics server and a newer kernel than exists in Debian Stable (or Testing, as we've found out the hard way.)

Situations like this illustrate why sometimes, especially if as long as you know someone like uc50ic4more who can get 'er set up and running; a rolling-release, cutting-edge, for-advanced-users-only distro like Arch might well be perfect for most.

They've already got Alphas ready for their version 2, which will be based on Debian Wheezy when it goes stable. They're apparently trying to modify Gnome 3 so that it looks and works exactly like the old Gnome 2 interface. If they do that successfully they could well become the next "killer" Linux distribution. Using Debian Stable as a base (rather than Unstable or Testing as other distributions like Ubuntu tend to use) might give users the stability and ease-of-use they need.
