So what is your take on Wendy's "Natural" fries?

I like the Natural Cut fries better than the older ones. I usually just get the baked potato though since it is healthier. I also think Wendy's overall has the best fast food burger compared to the other big changes like McDonalds and Burger King etc.

Salt application has to be the least consistent process I've ever observed at these places. Kind of scary when you actually witness it.

I have in the past tried the cookie sheet approach - might have to revive that. Would be cool if I could pull-off the Curly-fry style though.

I got a bigmac a few months ago in which the one of the meat patties literally was crusted with salt. I think a salt shaker some how fell over on it. None the less, they served it to me!

I think this is by design... You'll notice how everything else about fast food cooking is metered extraordinarily carefully to achieve both maximum efficiency and consistency of taste. Not salting, however. The finely powdered salt they use is shaken on by hand by some kid, out of a shaker with what looks like 1/4" holes in the top. It just pours on.

My theory is that they do it this way so that they can claim a certain amount of sodium for the nutritional analysis and actually make the fries much, much saltier in the store. Willful ignorance, in a way. They can't do this with any other process/ingredient because they know precisely how much is added.

I like Wendy's for the burgers and spicy chicken sandwich. Better than the other fast food options anyways. When it comes to the fries though, I always get a side salad or baked potato.

I hadn't eaten at Wendy's for a while until recently and I think the new fries are a step down. I thought the "old" version was really good, but the new ones were soggy, bland, and salty.

I asked the manager what the response has been and he said mostly positive, but some prefer the old ones - doesn't surprise me since almost anything "new & improved" tends to be worse to me.

The reason I even went to Wendy's is the return of their fish sandwich - pretty darn good even though it's overpriced.

I agree 100 percent. Once in a while my wife and I eat there when we go shopping.
I think the new fries are terrible. I was a manager at one of the stores in L.A. back in the 80's and I didn't like it when we changed the fries back then!

I hate to say it, but I agree.

[censored] strizzie. Oven at 450, wedge up some taters, lightly coat with olive oil, dump some rosemary and thyme and salt on them, and bake away. Best fries ever!

I eat at Wendy's pretty regularly, and I can't say I noticed much of a difference. Like them the same as the old kind.

Better fries than most places have, and they have the best ketchup, weird as that sounds. Sometimes it's a bit off, not sure if they're alternating suppliers or what.

Not impressed that they recently (well, year or two now I guess) changed their fry/drink sizes either. The new small is the old medium. The new medium is the old large. The new large is a sandpail full of fries/pop. Didn't they see Supersize Me?

OK - I want to resurrect this thread to say that I ate at Wendy's yesterday (asiago spicy chicken club goes HARD) and the fries have changed for the better. They're still 'natural' (meaning they have the skin on them) and they are still salted with sea salt, but they're cut somewhat thinner. This results in a much tastier, somewhat crispier fry. Even the skin part tastes good. I really like them quite a lot. I still think the whole thing is a cost-cutting measure, but if the fries taste good who cares.

Anybody else tried the fries recently, and if so have you noticed a difference?

I tried them again maybe a month ago and while somewhat improved, I still think the original fries were much better.

Saying they use Sea salt is just another marketing ploy to gain more sales. Sea salt isn't much better than any other kind of salt. It's still a refined, isolated mineral that we're better off to get from foods.

I'm trying to get off of the salt habit and have taken a lot less salt than I used to. I try to get all the sodium I need from organic celery, carrots juices, etc. A little salt does go real good with fresh popcorn.
