..at The Home Depot yesterday, and when I got there, they were sold out. Sold out of OF REEL MOWERS, for Pete's sake. I wanted one for a little trim work around my yard that's a bit much for the weed whacker. Who knew that there was a demand for reel mowers!? In all my years, I can't recall ever seeing anybody using one of these things, and the day I go to buy one, they're sold out. Amazing. I guess I'll buy it online from THD.

I've been using a small Brill reel mower for a few years now for my small touch-up work. Very low maintenance and I have been very pleased with it.

I just can't believe how expensive they are. No way I'm spending 90 bucks on one. If you're in an urban area, have you tried Craigs list? I'm sure whatever you find there will require fettling/sharpening, but if you want a reel mower you're probably the type that enjoys that type of thing (myself included).

I got one a few years back on closeout at lowes (end of season). It is great, and far more gentle on the grass. Plus, it is a bit better workout.

The only reason I was surprised that The Home Depot was sold out of the mowers is because I was in there a little over a month ago, and they had probably 15-20 sitting on several pallets. The did have one left, but it was the larger (wider) of the two sizes they sell, and I need the narrow one for my application.

it's that kind of thinking that moves production overseas.

I bought a reel mower about 12 yrs ago, American made, I believe it was about $65 at the time. works well (not everyone realizes the blades spin MUCH faster than the wheels)but I haven't used it in a while. if the grass is too tall, it has a tendency to just push the grass over instead of cutting it.

They sell like crazy near me because a lot of Canadians (in this area anyways) are trying to go "Green" I see more and more people using them or electric mowers.

Hey, it's got '10" wheels with radial tread tires'; bet those radials probably make it handle tight turns better, eh???

Anyway, I have one just like that sitting in the garage - it was used about 3 times before my niece, who was living with us at the time and thought it would be a good workout to mow with it, decided the power mower was better, after all...

IIRC reel mowers are actually better for your grass as they clip it like a pair of scissors as opposed to an ultra-fast sickle action which can tear the tops of the grass blades. I used to have an MTD six-blade reel mower when I mowed my mom's lawn- it was a beauty. Gave it to the neighbor gal when mom passed on and we sold the house, AFAIK she is still using it seven years later.

If they were more affordable I would purchase a power reel mower for my yard, and in fact I may do so if my Honda ever gives out (yeah, right!!!). Maybe a two-gang or three-gang reel setup... yeah... I love the thought of reel mowers!

I purchased the Scotts 20" Reel Mower at The Home Depot today. It doesn't work as well as I had hoped, but it gets the job of trim work done without using any gas or oil. It's a good workout.
