So I guess I am buying a car

Which is why I am going to head back to Mazda tomorrow. If they just had the 2014-15 redesign out that borrows from the 6, I'd be all over the Mazda 3. The current "smile" though...ehhh.

And yes, the Prius is the ultimate appliance. My numbers show me that.

I can buy a 2010 CPO Prius IV with 21k on it for about $21k. Over 5 years, assuming both are equally reliable, I'd save about $4700 vs the Mazda 3 at $22k purchase price.

And no sunroof on Cruze Eco. I remember there was a reason I din't want to consider it. Does a sunroof really add that much weight?

I was hoping a Cruze LTZ AT would put me in the 30s. The diesel is attractive, but I need to read more about that motor's history. GM and passenger car diesels don't exactly have an awesome track record. I'd like a good 5 years out of this car. That'd put me at 110k on a new car. 130k or so on a slightly used model.

How long do their batteries last and does a new battery pack negate the savings in gas?

From reading the Prius forum, there are people over 200k on the original batteries. I believe the battery warranty is 8/100000. I'm planning for 5 years with my next car, so I should be OK.

The Prius might be cheaper in the long run, but if you "love driving" like I do, you'll gladly take the financial hit for a more fun car (the Mazda).

I too am anxious to see what the next 3 is like, as the new 6 is fantastic.

Go for a Prius. If you think that you can make up for the additional up front costs, on the back end in additional fuel mileage... then try one.

If you don't like it, try something else. It's not like the value on a Prius is going to plummet any time soon.

My now wife bought this house before I was a consideration. She works nearby, I don't. Someday maybe we'll move closer to in between, but selling and buying a new house isn't exactly peanuts. Plus, those in between houses are much more expensive. So I suffer for now.

There is a commuter bus service, but it only leaves my work place 3x's in the afternoon. I've only been at my new post for 2 months, but have already spent a few later nights there. The bus wouldn't work.

And that is my dilemma. I really want something with a pulse, but I'm also a numbers oriented person. Ideally I'd be at the BMW dealer grabbing a CPO 328i M Sport, but I already ruled that out. Next was the TSX, which I pretty much ruled out. After that, the GTI...ruled that out too.

agreed. Impreza looks good on paper. The fact of the matter is the caliber wasn't terrible. Dart couldn't be too bad

You're looking to purchase new, right? If not, see if you can find a good MT Toyota Celica, 7th generation. I got my '02 for 7k out the door (3 yrs ago) and with a 1.8L, it looks great, drives with plenty of punch and I get between 31-34 MPG with 80% highway/20% city driving.

The wife turns a lot of heads when she's behind the wheel. LOL

Impreza I crossed off because the real world returns on it seem to be in the high 20's rather than 30's . Our other car is an Outback, so I trust Subaru enough. I'd rather just buy some winter tires for the FWD car than pay in fuel for the Subaru AWD.

For what its worth my Kia salesman, who was my Subaru salesman last year (it is a Kia/Subaru dealer), trashed the Impreza for being too loud and uncomfortable when I mentioned I might want to look at an Impreza. He is a [censored]'er though.

In re: the Dart, I havent' seen that great of fuel economy #'s from it, and the multi-air takes premium.

I'm up for suggestions. Just with the current used market being inflated, I've been focusing on new. For example, I've seen 2010 Civic EX's with 20k for $18k, while a new 2013 EX-L Navi is advertised for $20500. Not much of a difference.

I am a bit over the coupe though, although I suppose if a suit jacket hanger would fit, it would be OK.

Buy a used 2-3 year old Mazda 3 or Civic (avoid 2012 Civic). And whatever you do don't buy something like a new or used Dodge Caliber - yikes what a POS. My son drives a 2010 Mazda 3 and loves it - rock steady reliable.

Sit in the Dart -- guarantee you the interior will make you scratch it off almost immediately.

The 2013 BMW 320i looks to be nice too. Turbo-4 with tons of torque.

The Civic did not impress me. If not for the real world gas mileage, and the 11 years I've had with my Honda, it wouldn't remain on the list. It is ugly and it's navigation system is at least 5 years old.

Ideally I'd be buying an E46 M3. Or E46 330i ZHP. Unfortunately I can do math and realize I don't want to spend the difference.

If the Kia actually delivers 30's mpg, it could be in the running too. Handling was OK. Braking was good enough.

What I need is the best tradeoff between economy and driving fun. The Mazda 3 might be it, despite its ugly front end and somewhat antiquated Navi interface.
