My sister's new boyfriend has an '02 GTS coupe, and we had some time to kill before Easter dinner so we went out for a spin.
My first impression was, "How can they sell this to the general public?" I know some of you are used to even faster cars, and I have driven a few "quick" cars, but I was not prepared for the torque just off idle and how little I had to use the throttle to drive somewhat normally. After I adjusted to that and hit the throttle in a straight line, it was pretty amazing. It was an american car and I had to double check that the big numbers on the speedo were MPH and not KPH as getting to 60-70 mph felt like getting to 60 kph, just a little throttle blip in 2nd...
He had some fairly new pilot sports on, but I think with a 60F day and older worn pavement, they would not stick in 1st or 2nd, so I did roll in 3rd from maybe 45mph(~2800rpm) and not even quite full throttle and it kept the back end squirming at the edge of traction as long as I stayed on the gas...
I tried a couple hard corners but the lack of TC or stability control and option of instant wheel spin made me pretty wary of pushing it much at all.
He drives the car almost daily in the summer so I don't know how he keeps his license or keeps it on the road in the wet.
I have a hard time believing that the car only has 460hp while a new Viper has 600 and what that must be like to drive... I think it would take me alot of track time before I would need more HP than this one! It was a great experience that I won't soon forget.
It was funny driving home in the Tracker too, it felt like it had a lawn mower engine in a sound proof box...

I know the feeling, nothing is the same after driving what I call the rocket cars. Yep, after that kind of performance, makes u wanna cry or go buy a ride that really goes.IMHO>

Yeah man, those cars are amazing. What's really scary is their rate of acceleration once you pass 90mph.

Nevermind what the handling limits are....

Do want to do.
My bucket list is mainly things with cars..
Including driving a car like a Viper as fast as I can around a road course. I can't even imagine how much fun that must be...

I did it in a Gallardo last year. Apparently I wasn't even reaching the car's full potential, and that's after driving my own car around the same track several times prior...

I was thinking that too, but the jump from a Neon to a Viper is a big one! I guess once you do a few dozen laps you get used to the speed but controlling the rear end would be tricky, it would be easy to get a bit greedy on the gas and around you go!
Have you done some lapping in your old saturn? I love thrashing my Neon around the Mosport DDT. Sure its slow but you can still get a nice little 4 wheel drift from curb to curb to curb and know that's pretty much a perfect corner. Then try to do a lap of them, then try to do a string of laps like that... I find it addictive even though I'm still trying for good single laps.

The funny part is, after you drive it for a few days it seems normal. My new bike weight is 480 pounds wet and has 120HP at the rear wheel, seems normal now that I've got a few K miles under my behind.

I never did do any laps with the Saturn but it's something I've always wanted to do. It's still on my list of achievable things, to get a car that is trackable. I never wanted to with the Saturn because I commute and I need my car to work. I'd like to get another SL2 or Neon and do just that with it though. They are good handling cars and can be a blast to drive!
