Stupid truck that is an '02 Envoy with 151k miles is using about two quarts every 3500 miles.

Oil change guy said I should try high mileage oil, but am wondering if it too will be consumed and I'll still need to refill it, just not as soon. Or will it eliminate the oil consumption so I would be better off going that way instead of regular dino and having to top off every few thousand miles?

Thoughts?

And if high mileage IS best way to go, which brand is best for this?

Thanks guys

Sorry, burning it. NO black smoke or leaks anywhere. Very frustrating since I've babied it since day one at 37 miles off showroom. I've even change oil before 3k miles and never let it get to much over 3k until this last time, but it's second time this happens.

I'm in the same boat with the Civic. I tried HM. 'Worked' for a while and then the car burned it still. Then I switched to MC 5W20 Blend and the same thing happened. No burn for the first weeks, then burning. Since the consumption is the same with either, why spend more on a HM? So I make up fill with MC Blend.

Doesn't bother me and it gets fresh oil.

Try adding a quart of MMO to a fill of oil, maybe for a few changes. 'Might' free up the rings a bit and reduce consumption.

High mileage oil can help a seal leak, and even help with burning a little bit because they generally are thicker.
So just get a thicker oil - this is the oldest trick in the book.

So no PCV valve? PCV valves are listed for sale -this indicates there is a valve.
But there HAS to be a PCV system of some sort. This would be #1 to check and fix.

If the fill is 3.5qts, adding MMO will add to 4.5. Isn't that overfill and the risk of foaming things up?

M1 10w30 HM to 5k for a few changes, then run it for the duration of the OLM. My dad has an 04 Envoy with the I6 and the OLM goes to 0 around 9k. The M1 should help clean things out a bit. The PCV system is also something to check out.

Substitute a quart of MMO for a quart of oil.

Or, if you've done an oil chage, add a pint of MMO to the current fill. Up to one-half quart (IIRC) of overful is no big deal.

Ah. That makes sense.

Congradulations you have a self changer. Fill with M1 EP or Pennzoil Ultra and add a Qt every 1750 miles. Change Filter every time the OLM goes off.

Run a sump or two of Redline 5w-40. I'd recommend Auto-Rx, but that will start a bashing fest. The ester basestock may disrupt any ring formations that are potentially causing the consumption. It won't be cheap, but you should be able to get some decent mileage out of it.

But you seem to be doing a cost analysis here. I would say that you don't have a wear related "old age" case of consumption. Very few engines do. You've maintained it well from new, so I can't imagine it being mechanical fatigue. Surely possible, but highly unlikely.

Did you ever uoa it? you may have fuel dilution problems,do you idle allot or short city commutes and the oil doesn't get up to temp?
