Did you ever uoa it? you may have fuel dilution problems,do you idle allot or short city commutes and the oil doesn't get up to temp?

I do pretty much ALL short commutes of MAYBE 5 minutes total time from start up till get to work, to lunch from work, and from work to home (5 min each trip MAX).

Could that be it? That the oil doesn't get up to temp? And if so, why is that?

Thanks for all info and ideas guys.

If you want to free rings, consider doing a piston soak with MMO or sea foam. Dont just put it in the crankcase.

Sure it can be it. Under those conditions, the consumption rate should be measured in months and not miles.

Your oil never gets to any sensible operating temp. It may be enough to break even on the water production of the combustion process. Maybe not. Chemical reactions will be more protracted for those requiring heat, and the alleged corrosive effects of unburned fuel residuals at cold start will be a big part of your daily drive.

I would suspect (and I could be 100% wrong) that you would eventually form multi-layered films on all surfaces not under forced circulation.

Edit: ..and under those conditions, there's no reason not to use a lighter oil. If you're going the MMO route, I normally caution the user to go up a grade to compensate for the thin fluid add. In your case, I doubt you're even in the 50 range when you get to work ..even if starting at 100F.

Is this the 4.2?

I don't buy GM's statement saying that the PCV system is maintenance free.

If it doesn't have a valve then it must have some sort of orifice... I would detach that vac line that feeds into the manifold and backflush it with a spray.
