Snowden talks about Apple

Today's digital reach is akin to the discovery of harnessing fissile reactions. If you have more than a schott-glass of neurons you are worried about those pushing the buttons.

Welp...

Apple welcomes you to entirely exempt yourself from these scans by simply flipping the “Disable iCloud Photos” switch, a bypass which reveals that this system was never designed to protect children, as they would have you believe, but rather to protect their brand. As long as you keep that material off their servers, and so keep Apple out of the headlines, Apple doesn’t care.

that pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

Given you can disable Apples cloud storage for photos i see it as non issue.

I have no issue with them flagging. However as far as sharing the images with law enforcement nope. Law enforcement should have no access just a lead to investigate.

I agree with you but think we can all agree a company has a right/obligation to report illegal activity in their systems or their business.
We all agree, your phone is private and Apple confirms that, no one is spying on you. However dont even think about using Apple owned company equipment and infrastructure for illegal activities. We all know ALL the major companies scan their servers for this stuff and report it. I dont look at it as an invasion of privacy because you are storing that information on someone else's equipment.
With that said, I dont like the idea of paying a premium price for an Apple product that has this spyware installed on the device. Google and other companies scan their own servers, Apple would have to redo their whole system for that, so they are taking a short cut (if I understand it all correctly based on what I read)

Whether Americans want to accept this or not, they may not be aware it takes place across a whole spectrum of businesses, I think the one most Americans are naive about is their bank. In fact some of it not disclosed and some of it at the discretion of the bank employee, other reporting is automated and not at the discretion - every dollar is traceable and reportable.

No company wants to be part of an illegal enterprise and needs to take reasonable steps/some mandatory by law to prevent it. But one last time, I am against Apple pre-installing spyware on my phone, Im fine with them scanning their own equipment and servers.
How can a company built on privacy and security be trusted by people around the world in repressive governments who kill and torture their own people knowing there is something on their phone that might be able to compromise them for their politics, religion ect?

I trust with Apple its a rock solid system to prevent this but just the notion that it is there can be frightening to them. I'm actually a bit surprised that Apple couldnt come up with something better. Some might know I am a pro Apple person because of their privacy policies and this causes me to rethink that position. At the same time, its still more private then the other systems out there until some other company comes along with a better system. This might actually speed that up.

I agree with Snowden. I also believe it's long past time that our elected leaders start policing these monopolies like they once did.
The politicians receive lot$$$$$$ of lobby money for the tech companies. The politicians we keep reelecting do not serve us in any meaningful way other that around election time.

I can tell you my next phone will be a Pixel or Librium 5 with Open source projects, and my next laptop will be a Dell with Linux.

Open source is the only way forward.

Seems like due to all the bad press Apple has delayed the rollout of the spyware, most likely until the public gets used to the idea or the media stops covering it... There are more privacy functions in OS15, I posted the link in another thread
