Snake in my pond

Just saw a little one taking a sun bath close to the pond. Looked similar to big one. I was able to take a look at it's head and eyes. It's round. When I came back with my phone to snap a pic, it retreated to the bushes.

I went down to the creek to spot more--no luck.
Can they come from here?

And go on the way up here? (Pond is behind trees close to the top of the hill)

it doesn't look like either a Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin) or Copperhead to me, at least from that picture. Certainly not like the locals around here.

Copperheads are pretty distinctive. Cottonmouths are aptly named.

I'd just let it be unless I knew for certain it was venomous.

If you don't want to kill it I have read that spreading around some sulfur powder will repel snakes. I tend to think of reptiles (I have lizards around here) are beneficial critters.

I would try a more peaceful solution before just killing it.

Also, seems that snake repellent can be purchased online and at home/garden stores.

Well I spotted and tried to catch a little one today. Several times.
Almost got it. It is harmless to humans water snake. Judging by it's head, eyes and how it swims and it tying to run away not attack. Nor so sure about bigger one I saw first.
I found out that snakes don't like strong smells.
So I put some garlic powder around pond and into pond. It's also beneficial for Koi. They actually ate garlic powder. It seems that they will eat everything and if I keep my hand to long in water they will eat it

Finally met a big buddy. No so sure about it. Took a good pic of head. Doesn't look so round to me.

I actually found it under big rock, grabbed it's tail,but it escaped again into pond. I read after that they bite too and it's hard to stop bleeding. Not going to touch it again.

Unless you have pets/kids that my wander near it, I would let it go. I hate that humans tend to conquer nature rather than live WITH it.

I have to laugh when a grown man says "the only good snake is a dead snake". If the snake is venomous, I get killing them around the house, but on every forum if a thread about snakes comes up, there are lots of men who say to just kill the snake. Doesn't matter what kind of snake it is.

Make sure you identify your snakes each time you see one.

One of these days the dangerous cousin might just come by to stay for a while.

Saw 2 of them today. Warming up on the rocks. Tried to chase them out and they escaped behind water plants,read how much those fish can cost. Don't want to loose any.Took all plants out. Water got even more muddy. Well I ended up sucking all water out. Put all fish in variuos plastic bins. Came out more fish them I ever thougth. It was pita to catch it,even when water (if you can call it water,it was so dirty) was low.
Anyway I left pond unatended for 7 mins,crawled out to drink and use bathroom, came back, crawled in and little snake is already there. What a [censored]. Wanned easy meal. Surprised it was back. I used pump, big sho vac, so it was noisy.
Anyway chaced him into corner,(took a while) finally got it on a showel and swinged hard and send it flying into forest

wonder will it be back after that? Pond is drained right now,will clean sludge tommorow. My 1mz-fe had nothing compared to that. So much sludge,leaves,branches. Kreen will not help here,only manual cleaning

I am with those who say kill it regardless of the type. JMO. I would also suggest that you stop trying to grab snakes of any type as you clearly don't know what ones are an aren't dangerous. You have venomous snakes in your area so treat every snake encounter as if the snake is deadly. Eventually it will be for real.

I don't mean that( i.e. you don't know what you are doing )offensive or anything either. I would be in the same boat. I would be hard pressed to id snakes myself.

Don't touch ANY snake. Even the little ones/babies. Venomous babies still can kill you. Size means nothing. If you see a snake on your property kill it period. Also, be careful near the mouth after you kill it. Many venomous snakes can bite even after death( seriously ).

Well it didn't touch it by hands, used showel with long handle. And I'm sure now that those two guys are Midland Watersnakes. Which can bite but non venomous.

Talked to some guys at pet store. They told that it is really hard to get rid of those type ofsnakes. The best solution so far is to cover pond with net. Bought a big roll of windows net from bugs at HD. That should keep snakes away at they will leave after they can't get food. Also it will kepp leaves and brances from falling in. I have lots of big trees around.

Nothing irrational about a fear of snakes. I suppose there is nothing that you have any issues with?

Got tired of it, just shoot it from BB hangun. 4 shots 2 hits, from upper deck,it jumped from pond down to bushes. It didn't kill it,but hurt for sure. I was hit by ricochet from this gun and it hurt pretty bad. Wonder if it will be back.
