I invited both my grill and stove into my house. I am aware of the dangers of operating them, and take necassary precautions. They didnt just up and decide to show up one day for me to stumble upon and possibly burn myself or my house down. I also know what brand and type of fuel they use.

As a child I was playing in the yard and stepped on a water moccasin. By the time I knew what I stepped on, I felt a pain in my left leg that I can only equal to getting hit with a bat. Next thing I know my parents are in a sudden rush to get me to the hospital, where I have received more shots then, then I have ever in any single hospital visit, including surgery. Im not outright irrationally scared of snakes, but suffice to say that they do give me pause, that and chills. And yes, if one gets close enough, or I cant ID it and its hanging around my house.......its dead.......period. Dont give a hoot about what good it may have done or insects it may have eaten.

Just saw a little one hiding between rocks. Came back after flight. Loading my gun again and getting net out.

Does that mean if you ever get in a car accident (not your fault) that you'll slash the tires of every car you see?

No. The difference is that car tires, grills, stoves, guns, etc, etc do not have a mind of their own and wont hurt or kill someone by themselves. They require human input to be put into action and the position to cause injury or death. Now if someone......a human, who is capable of making a unilateral decision to hurt someone and acts on it they would be treated in the same manner. You are comparing apples to onions and this whole discussion is becoming asinine due to it.

Well I feel bad and sorry for the snake now.
I came out to check for delivery to the front porch. And the big guy was sitting there now, close to fountain.
I tried to stomp on the porch and it took aggressive pose. So I went to garage fully loaded (I think 13 shots) BB gun and shot it all.
Now I feel bad, since I saw at least 2 bleeding holes, snake went into corner and tried to hide under concrete porch. Curled up, dig it's head into small hole. I went to get some rakes, shovel and so on.
By the time I got back it was not moving, so I thought it is dead already. I tried to get it out and it started moving, but half of it looked to be close to be paralyzed.
I dig it out, put on my rakes, and it was not really trying to escape anymore, just moving head, upper part and tongue.
It was heavy btw. Took it down to the creek and let it go.
It looks like it can't swim good now.
I feel very bad now, especially when I saw it's trying to dig into ground to save it's life and bleeding holes...
Hope it will survive in that creek and never come back.
If not my Fiance, that is arriving soon, I would not do it, don't like to hurt anyone. She is very afraid of snakes.
If it would not sit by the porch and taking aggressive posture, I would just try to catch it...

I don't get why people just want to kill or destroy things that they simply don't understand. Why not just get an outdoor cat. That will keep any unwanted residents off of your property.

I will get a cat and dog and big indoor fish tank little bit later. If shake would not take agressive posture, and run away as usual, it would be fine by now. But don't want it to scare to death my fiance, especially bite her one day. If it will not survive it will be a good meal for big birds like hawks and eagls that we have around here.

shoulda left the dam thing alone. That said I don't know american snakes but even though I can't stand snakes they should really just be left alone or get a snake wrangler to take them away.

What`s going to happen now is you`ll get a huge rat infestation. Also, good snakes will keep the dangerous ones away. King Snakes,Rat Snakes,Chicken Snakes, etc are very beneficial to have around. You water snake would`ve kept mocassins away too. Reason he was sunning on your porch is that they need sunlight and heat to survive. He also trusted you and that`s why he felt comfortable so close to your house. I just don`t know why some people can`t learn to understand nature and live with nature, instead of trying to change or destroy it.

Agreed. At least if you are going to kill it, do it quickly and humanely.

This isn't a Disney movie.

It's science and nature. Fear and ignorance of the unknown is illogical.

And with science and nature, things kill and/or get killed on a routine basis for other reasons besides food.

I would like to think I have a high regard for the "natural way" or conservation ethic as Aldo Leopold coined it. But, I would be a hypocrite if I took a stance to let all things exist "naturally".

When mice, rats, flies,or cockroaches invade your home, do you allow them to co-exist with you, or do you kill them? If your religion, i.e. Buddist, dictates your stance, then you have a legitimate excuse.

If you say a snake, or deer, or rabbit, or whatever is of higher value than a cockroach or fly, then that is hypocritical also.

There is no reason to kill such snakes. They are valuable for the control of rodents. Besides, if you kill one, another from the surrounding wooded area will eventually come to that territory.

As stated earlier, snakes keep the mice and rat population under control. The way to keep flies and roaches away is to not live like a filthy slob.
