Got an email from a social network popular in China nd India, telling me a message from X is waiting for me. I know X, but the email is not from X but from noreply@[insert social network]. I suspect this social network got a hold of that person's address book and is now going on a hunt. I smell a rotten phish.

I don't have any social media page. I have no idea if the other guy does. We know each other on a business basis and it's been a few years that I have heard from him. There is no way he would contact me about anything other than business. It's possible that a family member or friend let my email address slip or got hacked. but still, how can anyone make a connection between two people who had no contact other than via business email? Clearly it is possible, but at this point I can't see how.

Your friend's email account got probably got hacked,sending everyone in his address book spam. Reminds me of the time I started getting emails from my dad's elderly female neighbor advertising male and female "enhancements" haha!!
Did the email mention you by name or anything, or was it very generic? There's still the old trick of sending out groups of emails hoping for hits, as in:

[email protected]
[email protected]....
I get hit by these all the time, because sometimes they're not even smart enough to use the BCC functioning, and there are 200 recipients in the "TO:" field, all with similar email addresses to mine.

Okay, that doesn't sound like a randomly generated thing at all, then. I get strange emails once in a while, but I have one email that I use for everything I ever have to sign up for, so it gets so much spam, you wouldn't believe it.
