I have a 98 volvo that has developed a slight transmission fluid leak. there is no filter with this transmission, so there is no pan gasket to leak . I can't determine exactly where it is coming from, but am guessing it is a seal of some sort.

Are there any additives that can swell seals and yet are harmless to the transmission? It uses the old dex III/merc fluid and I flush it every 30K as that is when it starts getting burnt (very common in these volvo's).

I was told by a transmission rebuild specialists never use any product that "swells" the seals. It could cause major problems, cause tolerances to get off. It may not help with the leak but I would try lubeguard red. Its great stuff recommended by most transmission specialists.

Another thought, that old a car and up in salt country, check your cooler lines, they might have started to rust thru. I just replaced lines on a 2001 Escort that had just started to seep because of rust.
