Small SUV/Crossover without direct injection?

We need to replace the Outback. At 10,055 miles it was t-boned by a guy running a red light and totaled.

I loved the Outback and my first thought was another one. Looking back,the low fuel mileage and terrible A/C knocks them down a couple notches.

We're looking at small AWD SUVs or a crossover. I'd really prefer something without DI,it makes me nervous.

I don't remember what my wife disliked about the Honda CRV 2 years ago,but we both like it this time.

The CRV is a leading contender right now.

The 2013 Escape offers the 2.5 duratec but I think it is only in the base model without AWD.

I think the non-DI pickins are slim.

I went with the Outback over the Forester in 2011. The seats in the Forester left my back in knots.

Looked at the CX-5 yesterday. In the trim I want it only has 155hp. I tow a little aluminum boat,I doubt the CX-5 will have enough beans to carry some camping gear and tow the boat.

I love the Impreza 5 door sport. It has even less power than the CX-5 though.

Can't go higher than Sport trim?
CX-5: If you get a Touring (mid) or GT (top), it has the new 2.5 L engine:
184 hp @ 5700 rpm
185 lb-ft @ 3250 rpm

I think the CX5 has the "SkyActive" engine series which is direct injected.

The DI issues seem to have been pretty much resolved and what we keep hearing are pains from the early-adopters (Audi, BMW, etc.). Don't seem to be many complaints from GM or Ford DI owners.

We're able to afford higher trim levels,but I prefer to stay with fewer gadgets and likely more reliability.

Thats why I bought the base model Outback.

I see (and understand).

However I thought that the CX-5 in Touring trim are pretty simple and not too gadget-filled.

I can't see anything that's extra on the Touring that would affect reliability over the base model. (but I might have missed something)

Have you looked at the "new" 2014 Forester? The reviews I have read are favorable. I'd consider it if I had to replace my '05 Forester.

Direct Injection is nothing to be worried about. It's been around long enough, and it's refined and working well.

Remember, people that experience trouble are also probably not maintaining vehicles well. No oil changes, etc.

If it worries you that much, look into purchasing a powertrain only extended warranty from the manufacturer. These can generally be found for about $600 per 100K miles.

I like DI, I have a vehicle with DI and the MPG's are impressive. As is the performance.
