small oil filter

Good point, I'll have to get a good one. I'm a hard core traditionalist that uses the same metal strap wrench I used for almost all the 30 years of changing oil

. I guess I'll have to enter into the 21st century.

But in all honesty you still have to work your way around the drive shaft and suspension and lean your arm on the hot exhaust pipe and cat convertor. I just wonder what engineers were thinking about by burying a frequent maintenance item so it's a major pia to to!

I used to torque filters with a wrench. I got cured of that folly when I was barely able to remove a filter from an 82 Datsun Maxima Diesel. Left a nice dent in the right front filter, too, from bracing my knee against it... Ever since then, I hand tighten. After lubing the gasket, I spin the filter on and tighten as much as I can by hand to seat the gasket in the filter's base plate. (Just in case it's not bottomed already) Then I back the filter out loose, retighten to a little -less- than initially, and leave it there. (The gasket swells slightly after being exposed to motor oil.) I've never had a leak, and I can remove the filter by hand at the next oil change, which can be very convenient considering the way some cars' clearance space near the filter is.

For 2000 mazda protege 1.8 liter I ended up getting the oem mazda oil filter for 626 (v6)product number g6y0-14-302a-ca on box it says manufactured for mazda canada.On filter it says product of usa. Who makes this filter the baseplate does not look like a fram,it has 6 large holes and a y stamped on it.Also inside you can see a spring in steel casing.Is this filter okay for 1.8 liter protege?It is about 1 inch longer than original one, will it fit.also oil capacity is 3.5 liters how much more oil will I have to add.

You will probably need to add an extra 100 or 200ml of oil with the new filter, but double check on the dipstick when you're done changing the oil.
