2002 Dodge Ram 4.7 190,000 miles. I have used an assortment of Conventional oils and filters for the life of this truck, and have never gone more that 5 k between oil changes. I will admit that until I became a member of this site, that I had neglected the PVC system, I may have only changed it 2 or 3 times. The story starts like this.....I noticed a "burning oil" smell, looked around under the hood and found that the retaining clip that holds both of the coolant hoses (incoming and return) had came loose and the hoses with the plastic clip were LAYING on my valve cover!! For quiet some time it looks like. The constant vibration of the engine finally wore a hole through the magnesuim valve cover, and oil was splashing out of the opening and running down onto the exhaust manifold!! I know, its hard to believe that magnesium is softer than plastic! Any way ended up buying a new valve cover at the stealership for $107. When I took the old valve cover off, I was a bit shocked at what I saw! I didn't clean any of this sludge off, I was afraid I would not be able to collect all of the small pieces of sludge, and I would end up with "chunks" of sludge clogging oil passages. So I just replaced the valve cover and decided to attack the sludge slowly. My attack plan is to switch to Pennzoil Ultra immediately and do some frequent oil changes, to slowly dissolve the sludge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! [img:center]http://img17.imageshack.us/i/valvecoveroff.jpg/[/img]

Was it you I saw broken down this week on I-10 north of Boerne, TX? Red Dodge'm pickmeup with an Exxon Valdez oil spill under it. Massive blue smoke drifting across the highway....

Need better pics of under the valve cover itself showing the sludge. Only one of those was of under the VC, and it wasn't a very good one.

Hard to see the under the valve cover pic but it appears to not be that bad PU would prob do a great job for you with a couple shorter than normal oc's. Bummer on the valve cover hole!

Oh Good!!! I'd have stopped but no place to park my RV along the road.

Boy that was a really ugly break down.... I thought it was on fire!

I think I'd go low tech and grab some Motorcraft blend in the right grade for the engine and change it at 3 - 4k. Couple runs of that should do the trick.

Just get some jb weld or 2 part epoxy and glue a small plate over it. It doesn't look to have a sludge problem, some varnish going on.

Yeah, you could have saved yourself $100 with JB Weld. Also, better and more pics of the engine would have helped. Course, you probably are not going to remove the cover again, just to take more pics.

looks like a quakerstate motor i tore into once. ive seen alot worse man i wouldn't freak out. just pick one oil and stick to it.
also try replacing one qt of oil with atf. that will get rid of the varnish.

Hasn't that myth been debunked about a billion times? Modern ATF doesn't contain more detergents than SM/SN oil.

I have to ask how that happened.

I had a car form a hole in its Oil Pan (hint: someone put it there.. JB Weld worked really good) and i might have a car with the beginnings of the Oil Pan "Rusting Out" maybe i should just use High Mileage oil and call it a day and stop trying to stick Synthetic in it if the "Pan might be rusting."

Not sure i have yet figure out how an Oil Pan "Rusts." If its used a lot...

I don't know why, but I'm a little skeptical to put anything but oil in my crankcase. I know alot of people on the site do, I just never have.

what about letting the truck idle for a while w some kerosene mixed in w the oil right b4 you drain?

evidently not, you ever seen the inside of a transmission that dirty? lol jkjk

i don't know what people have "proven" but atf works for getting rid of varnish. i have used it alot.
cant tell ya why it works....just does

yep. i herd diesel work too. both are light oils

idea
drain the oil and fill it all the way up with diesel, like till it wont hold no more. let it sit over night and drain.fill up with oil run for 30 mins and change. if all the stuff was broke down it should leave with the oil.

just a thought...

idea works 4 me, but idk about higher things such as valve covers etc, also the heat of the engine would aid in cleang, or i would think
