slow running

My computer is running slow. Youtube videos are ok on the audio side but the video is like a series of stills instead of a movie.
I have Canon Zoombrowser and I can't load pictures from my camera on it and there is a delay from every move I make to when something actally happens. I also get a box come up saying there is a problem with the site I'm on and windows needs to close, which it does and then recovers the tab.
It's a windows XP machine but with a larger hard drive 1 terrabyte.
Any ideas?

Change your browser to Firefox 22 with the recent version of Adobe Flashplayer.

Did this only started happening recently? If so, it sounds like some process is chewing up all your resources. Open the Task Manager and look for that process that eats up a lot of CPU and kill it.

It could be a virus/malware, in which case you may also want to scan your machine with antivirus/antimalware app.

Download that, run it, and make sure there is no malware. Once you confirm the system is clean, download www.ccleaner.com and run that program. After that, defragment the hard drive. Once those steps are done, we can move on to other possible causes.

Old computers dont keep up with new ones. Lack of memory and processing power. Also for youtube videos, could be internet speed. My guess would be old computer, mine is much the same.

Use Ccleaner to clean up the junk and registry. Then launch the utility in Ccleaner to clean up the startup items.

You probably have too many processes running on start up.

Also run malwarebytes as suggested and do a virus scan. I use Avira free for my AV software.

This happened after my internet provider downloaded a free version of McAfee a/v when I already had AVG. Then things started going wrong. The AVG does automatic scans and there is never any viruses but it has stopped some intruders.

Oh, I did remove the McAfee, bc I paid for the AVG and wasn't going to remove a program I paid for.
Also, I didn't hear good things about McAfee.

Did you install Mcafee while you had AVG on the computer?
If so its a conflict issue with something left behind after the uninstall.

Yes, I had both AVG and McAfee on it for a while. It all started going wrong when both were on and it didn't get better when I removed the McAfee.

I'm familiar with McAfee since we get it free with Cox internet and use it on both our PC's. Doing a Windows uninstall does not totally remove McAfee. McAfee has a special "uninstall program" you have to download from their website to totally remove their product. It's very possible there still may be pieces of McAfee on your system. Yes I know this sounds strange (needing their special program), but check it out on McAfee's website.

Don't run two virus programs as each one slows your PC considerably. Disable one of them (temporarily) and see if issues go away.

When I owned an XP machine(IBM T30) modern virus software was too bloated to run well so I went naked. I occasionally ran malware and web scans of the PC. I was floored three years latter it never "caught" a virus.

No worries. The fix is just to follow the instructions on the info I sent you.
You just need to use the tools for each of the AV programs to remove them completely.
You don't need a windows uninstall or anything drastic like that, just make sure both AV programs are cleaned off your computer, then do a full shutdown and then start the computer again.
Do a quick check to make sure nothing remains and then reinstall AVG from scratch.

You'll be good to go.
