slipping when cold

I have an 88 acura legend automatic that started slipping this year when it got real cold out. After driving a couple minutes and transmission warmed up all was well. Since spring hit I have had no problems either. A transmission shop told me my seals swell when the operating temp warms up and the slipping stops. My fluid is good, Is there hope with an additive if so what and why. Thanks

Try adding 6 oz. of Auto-Rx, driving 1000-1500 miles, and then getting a complete transmission fluid flush. If that doesn't cure it, start saving for a transmission transplant.

There are no additives that can be added to fix a blown transmission.
You say your fluid is good. What does that mean? Was it recently flushed? If not, I would get a flush and cross your fingers. If that doesn't help, I would get a professional diagnostic. It could be something simple like a bad solenoid, an adjustment, or partially clogged filterscreen.

Yes it was my solinoids. Two were clogged and not working.

A magnetic drain plug is a good idea. You can install a magnetic in-line filter...they're made by Magnefine and SPXFiltran, and sometimes sold under different brand names. Check you local good auto parts store. One of these would be installed in the transmission cooler line just downstream from the cooler in the radiator.

I'd still suggest a cleaning with either Auto-Rx or Neutra before your next fluid flush. It'll clean the transmission and conditions the seals, won't do any harm, and will likely add life to the transmission.

Sounds expensive. Good luck.

Clogged? caused by ATF infrequent changes and overheating.

Solenoid failure? usually caused by defective solenoid, poor electrical connections, heat, bad luck.

If you were lucky to get away with just solenoid replacement and everything works, I would get a flush with synthetic to help prevent future issues.

The honda acura transmission has no filter and has been only drained and filled. THe lower two solenoids had metal particals in them. I am assuming because there is no way for them to be filtered out. Two were not working when tested. I cleaned then all and they are working. The car drives like a different car now. No slipping at all. LOts more power. Shifts great. I am thinking about putting a magnetic drain plug on to catch the particals because I do change the fluid myself quite often.
