Ok I have a 99 taurus sho, 125k on it. I am using Royal Purple in it and I intend to get my 10k as claimed by RP since it was stinken 7.50 quart. Anyway, I am at about 6500k on the oil changed the filter at 5k, The oil has a slight gas odor. Still has viscosity and all but it's dark dark brown. Should I be worried? I would also like to note that I blew a water hose and the engine overheated extremley bad one time for a short period. Enough to cause detonation very bad, I quickly stoped and shut it off though. What is the temp that moly could come out of suspension? I only ask cause I am noticing for the first time I use a very slight amount of oil and hope moly ain't causing premature wear. I can't afford a UA.

Do you drive short trips? Gas smell in the oil could be from fuel dilation.

On another note, I am curious if you have had your cams welded. The V8 SHO engines are notorious for cam failures (the cam sprocket comes apart from the camshaft IIRC)

If you overheated, Id NOT keep theoil in there, regardless of price. In reality, $7.50/qt is cheap compared to an engine.

Unless you did a UOA, how do you know that you are OK for 10k? What was the logic behind changing the filter at 5k?

If you cant afford a UOA, then buy a cheaper, quality, non-syn oil, drive slower to save fuel, and make sure that the rest of your life is in line. Not to be a jerk, but a UOA is only about $12-15.

A gas smell alone does not mean that the oil is contaminated with too much fuel. A good question was asked above. Is your driving short trips? I also agree with JHZR2 that if your car was overheated I would change out the oil regardless of what else is going on. Like he said oil is cheap compared to your engine. I had a engine that I overheated because a hose blew off from a bypass around the heater core. After I got that fixed the first thing I did was drive and get some new oil to change out.

The aromatic faction in gas is such that a 1/2 oz of gas in 5 quarts of oil smells like it 50% gas. I wouldn't be concerned. If your really interested, send for a lab analysis to get a definitive answer rather than guessing.

Possible, Yeah I think I will change it with some Pennzoil Platnium. She got quite hot. Thanks for the info. And yes the CAMS were the first thing I had done on this car.
