I have 96 Accord that recently been experiencing a slapping sound at the front driver side. I have all the sway bar links and axel boots redone. Ideas?

I checked the tire and no screws or anything. Sounds if gum is stuck on it. Also, I can only hear it when braking at low speeds.

I'll assume that it just started after the repair.

Does it start "right from the get go" ..or wait for a few miles to be put on your run?

Instead of giving you the long and short of my experience, I'll just ask if an alignment was part of the repair...

A "broken" belt in the tire can give you that noise. As Tosh said, move it front to back and see if you still have the noise. The issue can also cause a pull as well.

Its at all speeds from what I can tell. No alingment was done after the axel boots and sway bars, which were done about a year ago. It sounds like a flat tire, whop whop, or its sticky. No pull to either side, car brakes well.

No, JMG

He's asking if you had a tire repair in the recent past. Some shops (fewer all the time) merely extract the offending nail (or whatever) and insert a gummy rubber (sometimes circular arrow shaped) "plug". It was being suggested that this could be the cause of the thumping.

Since the service was a year ago ..and you're just now seeing the symptom, we can probably, for the moment, discount the axles and stuff.

So ..do as others have suggested here and rotate the tires and see if the sound moves.

Okay. I beleive that tire was fixed a few months ago with more than one nail in it. Perhaps that is it. Thanks for the input!

okay the sound that I thought that was coming from the front tire driver side, is when I push on the brake and when I am almost at a complete stop. It does not happen if I coast to a stop.

Some more information.

I'm not sure if this new information will help the guru's here to help you or not.

I'm pretty sure that you need to DO somthing to help them though.

You need to inspect the suspect tire by jacking up that corner of the car and look at all of the tread to see what is there and report this back here. You also need to rotate that tire to the rear of the car and see what happens to your "Slaping sound".

I'm sure that the guru's will be able to help you if you help them.

Best Regards, John

Okay ..do you feel it in the steering wheel or the brake pedal as you approach a stop with the brake applied?

There's some run out somewhere ..and the brake pads are catching it.

I get low speed runout on my minivan. This was even after reman axles/CV joints were put in. In my situation, you don't get a noise or feel anything in the pedal ..the van just slightly oscillates (very minor) back and forth when you start out or come to a stop. It's like the tires are laterally distorted for a few feet.

When you rotate that tire ..take a good gander at your brake pads ..both interior and outboard.

Yeah I am going to rotate the tires and take a look. It doesnt pull or anything and the car brakes really well, and I feel the grab on the brakes right away.

Do us a favor, JMG. Let us know what you end up with. These puzzles ..or rather the solution to them adds that list of little suggestions for the next guy
