I don't notice it here in Indiana. I was in Seattle this fall and definately noticed it. I usually park away from others and walk, it's good for my car and me as well.

My bike loves those small parking spots though LOL.
Back in the early '80's I was sitting in my (full size) car in a small lot on the college campus, the lot with the smallest spaces. A professor came by from environmental design and lectured students how he was designing spaces narrower to eventually force people to buy only compact cars.
A decade later the SUV craze kicked in; today the minivan is a staple of every family with kids. I still wonder how teed off that professor is, because of the unintended consequences of his master plan.

With my truck at Costco it took a 7 point turn, (yes 7!) just to squeeze in straight between 2 cars. When I came out there was another truck next to me and a van. Sure made backing out a blast, don't even know how many of a point turn it was to get out. And then you get the people who are impatient because you're trying to park. Well excuse me not everyone drives a smart car.
I hate parking my truck, I always pull through. I don't mind the walk; if the weather is such that I don't want to walk, then I didn't want to drive either. But I've always tried to park farther out than necessary, less risk of door-dings and the exercise is good for me. My claptrap Jetta is just getting to the point where I don't care enough about it to park close--and even then I don't, as I'm not about to cruise around, wasting my time looking for the closest spot. Guess I'm lazy like that.
My former employer had horrible parking. They didn't have enough lot space, so they just repainted the lines closer together. Very difficult to exit my coupe' without touching the other car
