Shower Valve

[The Critic]

Cartridge in my parent’s shower valve is leaking.
I believe it is original to the house, so 1979 era. Trim shows Price Pfister.

I did a search and was unable to confirm the cartridge model needed, so I think we’ll need to hire a plumber to cut out the shower valve and install a new valve, cartridge and trim kit.

Does anyone have recommendations on a quality shower valve and cartridge? I have had reasonable success with Moen, but was told to be wary of their new M-PACT designs?

I'm also a fan of the Moen plumbing supplies with the lifetime warranty. You can avoid the issues with the M-PACT cartridge design if you install the Moen commercial grade valve which uses a brass cartridge instead of the nylon plastic cartridge.

Kohler and Delta have come up most often when this subject arises.

I was never a fan of the single cartridge mode.
Hopefully, cartridges are as improved as Fumoto valves. Remember, such items were bad too in the '70's.

I just changed out the cartridge in my 2015 Moen Posi-Temp, it's a terrible design and I would not go with it again.

I have an 11 year old Moen shower faucet that started dripping. We did a complete remodel when we bought the house in 2015, and in my mind that was yesterday. Reality, things we already replaced are starting to need attention. I specifically bought Moen because the previous house was built in 2006, 3 years later no hot water in one of the showers. Called Moen and they sent a new cartridge, I swapped it and don't remember it being anything difficult. Also the house before that had it's original Delta from 1994 and I swapped that no problem.

Call Moen and they send a new cartridge, great...

I always go with Moen for all that stuff. They've sent me replacements for things that are over 20 years old.

When I built my first house, I used American Standard fixtures everywhere. I noticed that when I went to public bathrooms the fixtures were usually American Standard. No problems with any of them in the nearly 26 years that we were there.

I have a Delta single handle shower faucet that was replaced in 1994 and is still going strong (no leaks whatsoever....knock on wood). I have had to replace the cartridge in my other shower's Moen faucet twice since a 2006 remodel.

I have Delta. After 12 years the automatic ( set and forget) temp system stopped working and the temps wouldn’t get hot enough. Delta warrantied it and sent new cartridges. Works great again.

I find that the cartridges can get stuck and it requires someone experienced enough to know how much tough love to give the cartridge when pulling it.

Just installed a Moen Caldwell in a friends house in place of an old 2 handle. I thought the quality was decent and the install wasn't bad. I did convert things over to PEX so connections were easy.

The current setup controls temperature and water volume using a single knob, but I think the water volume is fixed. It looks like I'll have to ask my parents if water volume control is a desired feature.

I have not attempted removal; I am concerned that I'll run into issues given the age.
