Should I Use BP/P1??

Hi fellow BITOGers, I've been a long time viewer (3+ years), but first time poster on this great forum. I've learned a lot from viisting this website about oil, filters, etc.

Anyway, I was noticing quite a few recent posts of others having issues with media tearing due to wide pleat spacing near the crimp/seam of PC/P1 filters.

I just purchased a Bosch 3323 which I presume to be a P1 clone internally, and as far as I can tell from looking down the outlet hole of the filter, I'm noticing this same wide pleat gap. Should I risk using this on my V6 Accord or cut it open and go with something like a Fram Ultra?

I was thinking of using Purolators now that I can get them from Walmart, but after reading about recent QC issues I plan on staying with Wix, which is a great filter and you can get ones that are made in North Carolina (Gastonia).

I was thinking the same. I think I may go with another Wix 57356 or upgrade to the Fram Ultra XG7317. I really care too much about my car to risk putting a filter on it that's not actually going to filter.. Just waiting for others to weigh in on this.

You are most likely fine but if you are going to lose sleep I think the best bets for worry free filters are the Fram Ultra, Purolator Synthetic, Wix/Napa Platinum. Those filters are so well constructed it is hard to beat 'em. OTOH if you do 3-5k OCI's you you really should not worry too much. Every brand including WIX have can have isolated issues. I think some of the failures are faked by haters. I would use the Bosch...pleats dont have to be perfectly uniform for the filter to do its job.

Use the Bosch Premium 3323 with confidence!

Here are some media pictures of one that I cut open. It had been in service for 5,100 miles. I wouldn't hesitate to run one up to 7,500.

IMO, either the BP3323/PL14610 will be just fine, and frankly I can't tell anything foro the linked pic. I just finished a 7800 oci on a Civic with the PL14610 and the results of the dissection look every bit as good as the 13k/2oci Bosch D+ 3323 from a V6 Accord I dissected and posted here. Replaced it with a PL14610.

I like Wix/NG filters too, but if the comparable Wix still has thread end bypass as the 5/1356 has, plan on sacrificing media area to the BP 3323.

I say use the BP 3323, I would with confidence. But it's your call.

Because from the pic I posted you can see on the hole furthest to the left is what it looks like most of the way around - pleats packed tight together - then there's that big gap that you see by looking at the couple holes toward the right.

Oh, just as a side note, it's for an 05 Accord V6 6 speed which is stored 6 months of the year due to winters being extremely harsh on cars around here with the massive amounts of salt and wet climate. It will take over a year to accumulate 7,500 miles.

I cut it open, doesn't look as bad as the pureone I referenced, however the pleats are as I suspected; wide at both sides of the metal crimp. Will post pics later..

Not as wide pleating as the other pureone I saw here near the seam.

Nice and even, narrow pleats around the rest of the element.

I know, I know I could've used it but I didn't feel comfortable and curiosity got the better of me.. If you couldn't already tell I'm super anal about my Accord. I used fram extended guard before with great results so I will pick up an Ultra once I'm ready to take off the current Wix.

I am waiting to hear back from Purolator after sending the defective filter I had to them. The Bosch Premium appears to have better quality. But then again I've cut 2 other P1's open before and they were fine.

Yeah, the quality control can only be so good for an automated process such as in filter manufacturing. However, the overall build quality of this filter feels great to me with the exception of the wider pleats (not to be confused with pleat spacing) near the seam.

I was a little worried that the wide pleat that you can see may end up taking more pressure and tear as yours did. Send me a PM (if you can do that on this forum - still a n00b here) or update us on this or your own thread. I'm interested in what Bosch/Purolator have to say.
