Think of it as buying a quality Champ air filter that happens to be in a Super Tech box.

That's what is weird to me. I never think of Champ as a decent option on filters, and they usually don't come up on part searches, but I've had great luck with SuperTech oil filters in the past, so I assume they're a good option..?

Although your's does look better, I'm still not sure quality control should be allowing the glue spillover since that edge is supposed to sit flat against the inside of the airbox. It's not the gasket surface, but still shouldn't have protrusions.

I don't think that's the case. As long as the sealant doesn't reach the edge of the gasket, it won't contact any surface of the airbox.
