I wonder whether a local store manager would know for sure why there was a company-wide sale or whether Mobil was giving them a discount on product during the sale.

When I go to Walmart and see a big stand-alone display of Castrol Edge in a prime location, my suspicion is that Castrol is giving some concessions to Walmart for that kind of exposure. It is just part of the retail business.

I prefer Mobil 1 and Royal Purple when it comes to synthetics. Out of your two choices,I`d stick with Mobil 1,but hey, that`s me.

I think synthetic (even if just a Group III synthetic) is worth the price and is no more overkill than "Super-sizing" your meal at McDonalds (and about the same price difference).

Walmart SuperTech Synthetic is nowhere close to PP. Completely different base stock and additive package.

Here are some posts in another forum that claims SuperTech is "virtually identical" to PP. Since "virtually identical" is not the same as "identical" I will modify the claim slightly. And other people in the same thread claim it is made by some other name brand company (but not sure if they are talking about the synthentic).

I suspect that even Mobil 1 makes a synthetic for some other brands (not just talking about their PAO stock).

"I was told by Tech Support at Royal Dutch Shell Corporation, (the makers of Quaker State, Pennzoil, and Rotella engine lubricants) that the Walmart brand of full synthetic oil (that is bottled by Warren Packaging Co. for Walmart), is supplied to Warren by Royal Dutch Shell, and is virtually "identical" to Pennzoil Platinum. I have used Pennzoil Platimum with excellent results. Shell has always made excellent lubricants, ask any truckers or heavy equipment operators who use Rotella, they consider it the "standard"."

I worked as a Wal-Mart TLE Service Manager for years and as for the store I worked in, the super tech synthetic oil was made by Pennziol. I know this by the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) that we had on all our products.

The only thing Shell sells to Warren is some base stocks. After Warren gets the base stocks they blend them with who knows what additives. Plus the base stock that Shell sells them is not the same base stock that is in the Pennzoil Platinum.

Same with Mobil. They just sell base stocks to them, they do not sell them the blended product.

I love the internet, he said/she said, so it must be true.

Believe me, SuperTech synthetic is no where close to what Platinum is.

I read that site you listed and I will guarantee you no one at Shell made a statement like that.

I don't care what RDS tech support told that guy, I don't believe that it is anywhere close to the same oil as PP. WPP does not import tankers of fully formulated oils and then just bottle it all up for retailers, do they? I was thinking they buy licensed formulas or additive packages, and then blend and bottle at their facility with the specified base oil to make a finished product.

As far as ST being anything SOPUS, yes, it was in the distant past. Years ago I would buy ST for oil burners as it was the best deal around at $10 per 12 qt case, and it was clearly made by quaker state per the markings on the box.

Thats a good one. I wish that was true though!

At one time that was correct. Quaker State, before Pennzoil bought them had a packaging plant in Louisiana and they did package oil for Wal Mart. The Pennzoil-Quaker State Company sold that blending/packing plant to Warren years ago. SOPUS does not blend or package any oil for Wal Mart.
