m1 since 4,500 miles
currently 10k miles (car in storage)

When i take it out i was thinking about switching to PP since it is a great oil and currently $3 cheaper.

Q's
- my dealer is stacked up on M1, if it comes to any warranty work will using PP affect it?
i will keep recipes of oil and filter.
- i currently do about 3.5k miles in 6 months. i would say about 50% in traffic, the other 50 % is just driving to work at 4am with no cars on the road at 35-40 mph. Should i even use a synthetic??

It's a honda. The chances of any warranty work due to lubrication issues are next to none.

When does your maintenance minder indicate (miles) that an oil change is due?

Mixing oil is disastrous for Honda. Oh wait, that was Ford's infamous excuse for not doing warranty work.

PP goes very well in those small honda engines. It does well in everything, but when I recommend an oil for a small engine Honda, I always like PP for them. My sister had an 01 Civic with, what I think was, the 1.7 liter in it. She ran PP in it for 13k miles for 3 OCIs. By 13k miles, the oil was RIGHT on the full mark when I put it in. Never added a drop. So... I love that oil in those engines.

If you are considering PP, you might want to consider Walmart SuperTech Synthetic, which is apparently the exact same oil as PP.

I think synthetic (even if just a Group III synthetic) is worth the price and is no more overkill than "Super-sizing" your meal at McDonalds (and about the same price difference).

That is not true. Where did you hear that?

I switched from M1 to PP on one of my cars mainly due to availablility. I got tired of trying to find M1 5W20. It just wasn't worth the trouble when the PP was sitting there all the time for $3.00 less per 5 Qt. jug. I wonder how many others have switched to something else for the same reason.

I also switched my girlfriend's car from Castrol GTX to Pennzoil YB but that was due to pricing and maybe the stupid commercials that the price increase must be paying for.

i switched because pp has better wear results from what it looks like on this site and from other UOA i saw from this car. Also because i save $3.

After hurricane Ike stopped PAO production at the Mobil refinery, supplies have been extremely tight, but should be back to normal by now. But that is one reason why Mobil is offering a $10 mail-in rebate now, and they probably are subsidizing the current Advance Auto Parts sale on M1.

I would like to know where you are getting all this information...or is it speculation?

The part about Advance Auto Parts sale being subsidized by Mobil is pure speculation. That sort of thing happens a lot in the retail business. If the sale was a modest discount from the normal AA Parts normal price, I wouldn't have thought so, but it is fairly big discount over their regular price (including the M1 filter). But I don't really know. Even if Mobil is subsidizing the sale, I doubt Mobil is subsidizing the entire discount.

If you are asking about the M1 $10 mail-in rebate, Mobil said they were trying to make up for the supply disruption due to hurricane Ike. The rebate form says "thank you for your patience"...

Someone posted detail media reports about the Mobil PAO refinery damage during hurricane Ike elsewhere in this forum. The even listed which viscosities were on "allocation" during the shortage and what the percent was for each (compared to what a retailer ordered in previous years).

Here is the M1 rebate

Get your $10 rebate for a future Mobil 1 motor oil purchase.

Due to the impact of Hurricane Ike on our raw material suppliers, there is limited availability of Mobil 1. We are working to have your choice of Mobil 1 motor oil in stock as soon as possible.

Click the "Get Rebate" button below to register and print the offer form now (available for a limited time only). Save the form for a future Mobil 1 purchase made between April 1 and August 31, 2009. Then, mail in your Mobil 1 proof of purchase with the offer form to receive your $10 rebate check.

Rebate is good for a Mobil 1 five quart motor oil purchase or Mobil 1 oil change service. All Mobil 1 motor oil products, including Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Mobil 1 High Mileage and Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy are eligible. Limit two rebates per household.

My apologies as I mis-edited that quote. I knew about the $10 rebate reasoning, but I the subsidizing of the AA special raised an eyebrow.

I know the manager at my local AA, and he sometimes clues me in to why they run discounts on stuff. He said that often AA has to meet certain purchasing requirements for some inventory to keep their pricing consistent for all the stores. That being said it could also be a strategic purchase on AA's part if XOM cut down on the purchasing requirements. Maybe they purchased their regular volume, but got a bigger discount. I should see if I can get a hold of him to see if he could maybe confirm the reason behind the M1 sale.

He's said before that the reason PP is over $8/qt there is because of that too. He's tried to move it, but the vast majority of the customers at the AA's in the area turn their noses up to it.
