Should I get a transmission drain & fill/flush? How about coolant?

I change my own motor oil, but I don't do transmission and coolant work. I bought my car almost 4 years ago, but it's only got 15K+ miles (my E30 gets my other miles). Anyway, other than oil changes, I've had nothing done to this car. BITOG users recommended that I at least do a tranny drain + fill when I asked about this.

Seeing as how it's been several years, I decided that I would get a major service done, but I didn't want to pay dealer prices. I took my car to a local shop for a coolant flush as well as a transmission oil drain/fill, and they said they'd take a look at the car.

Strangely enough, after looking at the car, they said that I did NOT need those services. That blew me away, as these places usually say that you need things you don't really need. I wasn't sure what to think of that, so I just drove home puzzled. They did say that I should get an oil change, even though I just changed my own oil (synthetic) like 2 months prior.

Anyway, the transmission oil on the dipstick is still kind of reddish in color, but not bright red like when it's new. Isn't it about time to do it? If so, I'm not sure I want to go to this same shop as I fear they don't know what they're doing, and dealer prices are WAY too high.

See if you've got rubber cooler lines and that they're easily accessible. If so, this will be a snap for you to swap out the fluid. It will be so easy and quick that you'll want to do it more often.

For the sake of ease of getting it done, and because you're saving a buttload of $$$, get a Magnefine and install it in the cooler line. This affords you the advantage of just cutting the line in a convenient location instead of having to pull it off of some potentially "fishhooked" (aggessively "one way" barbed) factory fitting.
