Used Car transmission Flush or drain and fill?

On my 14 Venza V6, the Toyota dealer has done a total of 3 atf flushes at 120k and said there was minimal metal particles when pan was dropped at 120k mi. I did not see the pan.
Looks like this one only had its transmission fluid replaced once at 90k miles. So not as well maintained as yours. Maybe it helps after all.

As far as jerkiness during shifts, make sure the top "dogbone" mount isn't tired
They dry rot after some years, and the aftermarket ones are garbage 🗑️
And make sure the air intake bellows from the MAF to the throttle body aren't damaged from the engine rocking back and forth

I will post the third 120k atf uoa when I submit the sample to the lab. Generally the Fe particles are less 100 ppm per 40k OCI. I have sets of 09 ES350 and 14 Venza atf uoa data.

Against my wallet’s will I followed your advice and bought a Toyota filter. It was $80. I figured since I won’t do this again most likely for the length of ownership, may as well get the OE assurance.

I did a partial flush. I ran the engine with the cooler line disconnected and extracted an additional quart. 6 quarts total changed.
Still a few quarts of old fluid remain, but I’ve seen too many videos of how old fluid with clutch debris masks a dying transmission. So I’m going to do this first and see how it goes. If no problems, I will do a full flush next time.
I think you did the right thing buying the Toyota filter; that's what I did on our GS. Smart move!
Nice work. That trans will last a loooong time!

slightly disappointed, but there’s no change in shifting dynamics. I was hoping for slightly smoother shifts, but no change. Guess I’ll take it to the dealer for the transmission update.

I did a spill and fill with a filter change on my Camry at 235k mikes not knowing the history. The fluid had a brown tint to it, so I was very nervous. There were no shifting issues, so part of me was thinking if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I did it anyway with no issues and improved shifting. The fluid is turning brown again 2 years later, so I need to do it again. I should have done a couple spill and fills, but one was enough at the time. I used Toyota fluid.

@Kurtatron, try a shift adapt reset with the appropriate scan tool first. The cold 1-2 shift was harsh when I first got my vehicle, and with regular fluid changes and the occasional battery disconnect, it's now non-existent.

It can often take several drive cycles before a proper fluid change can be adapted by the TCU depending on many things. I wouldn't be hasty to go to the dealer just yet.

Did some more work on the RX330 today. This one was the conclusion of a failed attempt to change the front differential fluid.

The drain plug runs up near the exhaust pipe, so a standard socket and wrench won’t do. Neither will a wrench because the differential case doesn’t offer enough room for one.

I tried using a crow foot as recommended by another website. That failed because the bolt started to strip. Stopped immediately and came up with another idea. See the pics.

Worked flawlessly. Now I have this socket for all RX330 differential fluid changes haha.
