Should I change the oil after headgasket job?

So I only have 800 miles on the Castrol Edge in my car. The headgasket, and A/C will be done next weekend. What worries me is, should I change the oil? I mean it seems like a complete waste to throw away that oil after such a short time. If I have to, I will though.

The oil level doesn't seem any higher than it did when I changed it, and it doesn't look milky or anything, looks exactly the same as it did when it went in. Man what a waste of $27

It is a shame that you'll have to drain almost new oil.
I'd run it for a couple of hundred, and let it and the filter pick up whatever garbage got in while the head was off, as well as any metal and gasket bits, and I'd then change it.
I don't even like to remove a valve cover without a planned oil change, much less a head.

I would change the oil and pick up a decent oil filter and conventional oil for the next 3000-5000 miles. Oils I recommend are Pennzoil, Quakerstate, Supertech, Havoline, Chevron Supreme, Exxon Superflo, Mobil Clean 5000, and Valvoline. Oil filters I recommend are Purolator, Proline, Mobil 1, K&N, Supertech (classic), AC Delco (classic), Wix and Napa Gold.

Yeah I guess. It really is a shame, considering that the last fill made 1k miles this won't even make that, and I was planning 7500-10k for it. Ugh. I'm either gonna get some Havoline 5W-20 or Motorcraft Blend 5W-20 haven't decided yet. I will probably put the PureONE filter I took off it after 400 miles after draining it of the Maxlife that is still in it, or the NAPA Gold with 600 miles on it. I have two barely used filters, I see no reason to not use either of them.

The Motorcraft or Havoline 5W-20 will be great oil for your application. The PureOne or the Napa Gold will suit you fine and shouldn't give you any problems.

Although it is a shame to waste good oil I would get the oil out. There could be junk that fell into it, or some coolant. I'd rather spend the extra $$$$$$$$$ and be safe than sorry. JMO

Go get whatever is on sale and run that for 500-1000 miles and change it again.

Why do you have "barely used" filters?

I'll probably run whatever it is for 5,000 miles or so. The first filter (the pureONE) was changed out for the NAPA in an effort to eliminate very loud lifter tick. When that didn't work, after 600 more miles, I changed it for my current fill of Edge 5W-20. So I have 2 barely use filters.

+1 change it right after the job with cheap (I used autozone oil and a ST filter) and the change that say a few hundred miles or a week later with your normal good oil and filter.

Crud will get where it shouldn't.
Particulate matter and coolant.
[Also, oil will get in the coolant.]
Run it for a day or so , and the change it hot with a filter.

Great idea, first time cheap oil cheap filter, then go with your favirite oil. That is exactly how I handled it when I pulled cyl heads, I wonder why I didn't mention it?

Havoline it is. Picked up 5 quarts of 5W-20 today, and cleaned out the NAPA Gold filter (~700 miles in use) with some PYB 10W-40 I had lying around, and all set for when it's time to change.
