I have not added any oil and the oil is down a couple mm on the dipstick but still well above the low fill line so the engine barely consumes oil. So should I let it run to 10k miles or drain it and put in some M1 0w30 AFE? I probably will not send a sample off for UOA so just looking for some opinions.
My brother has the same engine as you in his Vibe (aka Matrix). It's a 2003 with the 1ZZ-FE, 5-speed manual. His engine does have consumption issues (through the rings), but still has decent compression and runs fine. It requires regular top ups to keep it full. Also, Toyota has released a new dipstick for the vehicle, with a larger area between the L and H marks, so in essence, it adds 0.5 qts more capacity to the system. You should inquire about this and use it as your new fill guideline.
In any case, my brother has had no trouble running any good syn oil to 15k miles. He does mostly highway mileage, and combined with the regular top ups, the oil and UOA's seem to look fine. The only thing to watch with this engine over extended drain intervals is insolubles. It does tend to really load up a filter over an OCI, so always use a good extended drain filter such as Amsoil EaO or Mobil 1. I'm sure there are others that will work, but my experience lies with these.
Any kind of short trips on this engine will cause fuel dilution, and will necessitate a shorter OCI. I'm not sure that you do any short trips, but I thought I'd warn you in advance (especially in the winter).
