Should I change it?

We bought a used car last Sunday. Got it from a Dodge dealer. They alegedly changed the oil and filter a few weeks ago. The oil looks new. Has a Chinese oil filter on it ( that may still be better than a tearolater).

I read that this engine model has had reports of timing chains going bad and 27 hrs labor to replace them.

Truck calls for 5w30 with 10w30 ok also. Who knows what the dealer put in it? Don't most dodges take 5w20?

Thinking of running it a few weeks then dumping it for a brand that I trust. Maybe sooner?

When I bought my Accord used I changed the oil as soon as I had the chance. It will give you peace of mind and you can rest assured knowing your vehicle has the proper weight oil as specified in your owners manual, as well as quality products being used vs. cheap Chinese filters and bulk oil.

I've seen timing chain stretch on 1GR-FE 4.0L's & 2GR-FE 3.5L's, They all have one thing in common......Lack of maintenance!!
You can tell once you pull the oil pan, valve covers & timing cover.....And find everything looks like it was coated with black bed-liner.

I would run a Dexos 1 Gen 2 approved 5w30 synthetic if it were mine on a 5,000-7,000 OCI.

This job doesn't take 27 hours unless you counted 8 hours of sleep 'cause you were tired? I can do a RX350/2GR-FE in 10 hours with upper oil pan removal, A 4wd 1GR-FE 4-Runner will take 14-16 hours with upper oil pan removal.

You "CAN" do this job without removing the upper oil pan! Not an Ideal situation though IMHO.

I always changed the oil right away on used cars I have bought. Then I know for sure what I have in there.

When in doubt, change it out.

If in doubt change it but there is no reason to because the oil and filter are new.
Bottom line, whatever oil the dealer used is just as good as anything you use, as the API will be the same.

Dodge still have vehicles that call for 10w30. My mother-in-law has her oil changed at the Dodge dealer and they use Pennzoil 10w30 (what book says).

When I buy a used vehicle I always change the oil/filter.

I wouldn't think about not changing it.

Change the oil .. but might as well hit the diffs/tc. and spark plugs. and serp belt. and PS fluid. and brake fluid. and air filters.

The power train and driveline is pretty much my 07 4Runner.

Reset the life all the maintenance items as much as possible.

When we purchased our used 2017 Impala from a Ford dealer, part of the prep package, before we drove it home, was for them to do an oil change, among other things.
I popped the hood and noticed a new filter so I assumed it was done before we left the lot. The salesman, and the overall place in general, was top notch, imo, or at least I thought.

I debated back and forth once we were home with it and a few days had passed whether to change this oil and filter out or not? It was in November and I was tempted, (and based on what some others had said on here) to leave it until spring.

The oil on the dipstick looked too dark to me to be fresh oil so my OCD got the better of me. Since this was the first oil change I did on this car I never really paid much attention to the color of the oil coming out of the pan but clearly noticed how black the oil was (with only 200 kms we had put on it) when I was decanting it from my drain pan into my empty oil jugs.

It was clear to me at that point that the dealership only changed the filter to give me the false impression that the oil was also changed out. Also, when removing the filter they had put on, I had never encountered such a loose filter in all my life! I barely touched it before it started rotating off!!
I am unsure if the filter would have stayed put until the spring oil change but I highly doubt it would have. Needless to say, I am real glad I decided to change the oil and filter out when I did.
