Should I change after 8 mos/2,300 miles?

Last January I changed the oil in my 2001 Miata using Mobil 1.
Since then I have driven only 2,300 miles.
Should I change the oil... or wait and change about 7,000 miles?
Thanks...
Nick

If the 2300 miles consists of mostly very short drives like under 5 miles per trip I would change the oil. If your typical drive is more than say 10 miles per trip I'd say wait. Depends on the amount of water remaining in the oil and that depends on the length of time the motor is up to tempeture. JMO Ed

For $25-30 is it really worth taking a chance? I personally never leave anything in any of my vehicles longer than 2500-3000 syn or not. It's not a huge expense to change, And I enjoy doing it.

Yep Gopher,I`m right there with ya. I change my M1 every 2500-3000 miles as well. My car is a daily driver that sees ALOT of very short trips back and forth to work every day,and like you said,I think splurging $19.99 on a good synth is nothing compared to replacing a $40k car. Plus I plan on keeping my car for a very long time.

Mobil 1? once a year is fine, next time you drive, drive over 10 miles to burn off condensation.

Hey guys, you should use a better oil, leave it in longer, get better protection, save time & expense, & create less waste. Oh, & do a few UOAs to actually know what's going on with your oil. Then you can talk about things like this.

GrnZoom, for your location, you should be good for at least one year. But I didn't see any mention of which M1 you're using. In your location, I'd definitely use M1 0W-40 & only change it once every two years.

I think most of the European cars are recommended a 2 year or specific mileage (often 20-30,000 km)--at least for those that stay in Europe.

With AMSOIL 15w40, I changed the oil in my mother's old Ford (think it was a 1964) two or three times in the next 12 years, starting in 1977 after I became a dealer.
Did change the filter a couple times, if I remembered to bring one with me. She didn't drive much--most miles were put on when my brother or I visited.

A year should be no problem. If you drive it long enough to drive off any moisture, an oil sample might let you know if a change is necessary--and if you have any major engine problems.

For vehicles driven low miles, once yearly is fine, with the caveat that if they are never driven up to temp (meaning always short distances) then more frequent changes are needed.

The occassional "hot run" is helpful, but remember, the fuel and condensates that are present in the oil after a short "cold" run damage the oil (and engine) in ways that a "hot run" does not completely correct.

Change the oil in the Spring each year -- Winter months are the most likely time for fuel dilution and "cold runs". And you need your best (read thickest) oil for the Summer months, so get some fresh oil in there in April or May and you are good to go.

Wow those are some crazy OCI's for a syn oil like mobil 1...!
You could probably change the oil once every year with conventional oil , and the engine would still last well beyond 200,000miles.......

Talk about some engine oil paranoia around here.....:), do people will remember that test where the camero did 20,000miles on two oil filters and mobil 1. ???
I think they were called 3 mad ponchos or soemthing like that ?................

You guys are changing out that mobil 1 WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to early..................,

All the times I've used Mobil one my wear has been MUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH higher than with other oils.

Now that I got a new vehicle, it's german castrol FTW.

Here is probably the best idea IMO. Change the oil now. Have a UOA done on it with TBN. DONT drive it longer than you normaly would so any water in the oil can stay there for the UOA. When it comes back post up and we'll see what it looks like.

If your driving is mostly city-related, then change it at the one year mark. That should work fine - since you live in a non-winter environment. Had you lived in the northern climate, I would have suggested a change before the snow flies.

It's SoCal....55 when it's cold and 85 when it's hot. Wait to change it. There won't be much condensation- it doesn't get that cold.

He may have changed it by now, since this thread is 20 days old!

I would not waste good synthetic oil on an engine driven this little. I would use any name brand dino, and change the oil at 6 month intervals. IMHO, if you are not going to use synthetic to go to extended oil change intervals, you are wasting your money. Ordinary dinos will get you at least 200,000 to 300,000 miles if you change oil at 3000 to 5000 mile intervals.

I, personally, used M1 from the time it came out in the 70's to 2001, when I retired. I always did a one year OCI, which usually amounted to 18,000 to 20,000 miles. Never a lubrication problem, and my engines always remained quiet up to 140,000 miles. I never put more miles than this on my vehicles; I was usually ready for something new after 5 or 6 years.

Since I have been retired, my yearly mileage is now about 6,000, and I use name brand dino, changed at 6 month intervals. Can't see wasting good synthetic by using a one year OCI when that would only be 6000 miles.

So go 24 months on M1 instead of 12. Then you could just change your filter at 12 mo intervals (to avoid media breakdown). Or, if you really want to go the dino route, use a dual-rated oil & go back to 1 yr OCIs.
