Saw this on a site I check daily for automotive themed shirts. Seemed appropriate here

BLIPSHIFT SHIRT

Jamming a screwdriver through an oil filter was never a good idea.
Sorry! No shirt for me

Except on my Forester there's no clearance along the sides to impale the filter in that manner. Nope, they nested it in a round recessed cavity real narrow by design. Only snug that puppy to 1/2 - 3/4 past gasket contact else you'd better have pair of 45 deg pliers with a wide bite on standby come OCI time, to span the diameter of the end of filter and attempt to coax it loose. Don't ask me how I know this, or why the cap wrench fitting slips if filter's been muscled on (via cap wrench) But 45 deg pliers (channel locks) and some grunting will get 'er loose.

how many grams of blood where lost in the process?
I'm going to guess was a really..... pirate talk moment... cough cough Mercury Mystique and some non-existent space....

Had to do that on the wife 08 New Beetle when we first got it (used) OE filter was on there way way to tight. rubber o ring came apart in chunks. Vehicle maintenance here in Mexico is pathetic. I need one of those, just needs a BFH somewhere in the pic and it would be perfect.

Many.. MANY.. years ago, when I still owned my first car - a 1984 Chevy Cavalier - I was forced to do this exact thing during the 2nd oil change I had ever performed on the car, because the first time I did an oil change on it, I used a wrench to put the filter on.

... yeah, I didn't really know anything then. Was still in high school at the time. I had tried everything to get the filter off, and when I finally got around to trying the 'run the screw through it' trick, the filter was already deformed from trying so hard to remove it, including trying a strap wrench etc.. The screwdriver trick was really the only thing left, but it worked.

I agree that it is never a good idea, but at times over the years it has been necessary. It has usually happened to me on a new vehicle at first oil change.

I think it's funny shirt. I haven't had that problem since the first time I changed my oil. The shop put the filter on too tight. So I punched a screwdriver through my fender and turned the car while my uncle held onto the filter. There's your dinner.

Once in a while you've got to jam a screwdriver in your filter to get it off. Its true.

Not sure I understand what the joke here is with "OIL" upside down. Anybody know?

The last time I had to do that was the first change after I bought the MKZ from my dad. He's big on using the Valvoline quick change place in town. Fortunately, their filters were also thin-walled enough that it went right through. I've never been able to get a screwdriver through my usual Motorcrafts, Purolators, or NAPA golds that easily-I crushed up the filter pretty well before I went to the screwdriver.

I also ended up using my cordless impact to loosen the drain plug for that oil change.

The filter is hard to get at from the side on that car anyway, so bought both a generic end cap socket and one sized for that filter. After using the end caps a few times, I don't ever want to touch a strap wrench or other type of filter wrench again.

If you ever hear/see the phrase "710 cap"

It's a play on oil, from an old post somewhere
