Shifting auto trans without stopping?

I once was driving my aunt's Vega going about 45mph. When my nephew decided to go from the front passenger seat to the back, he by accident kicked the gear lever. The Vega didn't like that but it was probably the best thing for that piece of junk. It went to junk yard after that fun ride. I used to torture that Vega on the mountain dirt roads because I knew she didn't like that car. She let me torture her Opal she had too. She was the best aunt ever.

Well, WAAAYYY back when automatic transmissions were relatively new--The street racers utilized the following routine. From a stop you always used L (leap), after the speed built up a bit you shoved the quadrant into D (drag). Alas, some neophytes further slammed the lever into R (race). It did,nt work very well. John--Las Vegas.

Good idea. Trust me it was stupid! I did a few other stupid things with cars, but I'll save them for that thread.

Brake torqueing isn't too bad on a transmission though, if done for a few seconds, basically all you are doing is heating the transmission fluid with all the HP your car has at the trans stall speed...
In my Neon's case, maybe 50hp? A 60,000 watt heater sounds more impressive! I do it all the time for autocross to get my heap moving with a bit more authority. Fluid is nice and rosey and smells new even after a few seasons.



I'm very lucky, I'm wondering if the fact that the car didn't have a posi rear mattered? I know FWD would have been a disaster, but those cars weren't nearly popular as they are now. Thankfully as we get older we get wiser. Again Kids don't try this at home!

FWIW, my Dad always recalled stories of "Doin burn-outs in 3rd gear at 60MPH on the highway up to 100MPH in his 442."

He was also L88 Corvette Man.

a friend of mine has a 1956 GMC 150 pickup. it has the Pontiac v-8, and a hydromatic trans. it does not have park, you leave it in gear and turn off the engine, this holds it from rolling. you have to put it in n to start it. he is the same age as the GMC truck.

I've always thought this was bad to do since drive is a forward gear and you generally don't move backwards while driving. I suppose I believe the same about reverse since.

to:TallPaul you know, i dont know if it has a park brake. new subject: when i worked for Davis mfg. i worked with an engineer on legal issues. one thing that happened was a trencher had a runaway on a hill. two things happened 1. the chain drive to the ground, failed. 2. the brake failed. long to short. you have parking brakes, and you have emergency brake. they are NOT the same thing. ie a parking brake will NOT stop you

What about doing it intentionally to rock your way out of snow?

Anyway, with modern electronic transmissions I would think that they could easily prevent it if you were going more then X mph, if it were so detrimental to the car's health (or yours).

Some vehicles let you know quickly if they don't like it. I was with someone in a truck, I don't remember what it was, they shifted from one direction to the other (again, I don't remember which way) at about 5 mph. The wheels immediately locked until the truck stopped moving. I bet he didn't do it again.

If you like replacing reaction shells in the GM 4T60 or 4L60, go ahead and do this. it *WILL* fail.
