Sherwin Williams vs PPG Auto Paint

Friend's Honda Fit needs a new bumper. Both shops are reputable, though the main difference is that one shop uses the new Sherwin Williams water-based paint and the other shop uses PPG products. Does anyone have experience with either one?

No experience with either, but at our shop we use Dupont. Its a very expensive paint system. If the shops are offering a warranty on their paint finish, your friend should be fine. The advances in paint technology have come leaps and bounds in the past years.
Sherwin and PPG are fine products. Pretty soon all body shops are going to be required to use a water based system of sorts.

Most OEMS use PPG paints. General Motors, for example, use PPG paints exclusively. I lean towards PPG just because I have seen firsthand at my plant their technology, years of experience and quality of the paint. We tried a trial of Dupont paint once and it was subpar so it was not adopted.

However - for a simple bumper repair, I am sure any name brand paint would do you well...but if the price is not much more, go PPG. They take a lot of time to make all their products compatible with each other. Their primer, base and clear are all designed to work together so be sure the Bodyshop is using all PPG products. Likewise for the S/W since they probably match their products too.

I worked in the spray booth at the GM assembly plant in Framingham MA during the 80's using PPG paint. Prep is the most important part of the job. If it's prepped right, it will look right...with a little spray talent.

I'd go with PPG only because I've sprayed many thousands of cars w/o paint issues, and they've been in the auto paint business for many years.

I've only used Sherwin Williams house paint...which I like.

Dan- How does a customer know which is the best quality...does it say on the can? For example, how many different qualities are there for blue, and is it based on price alone? Just courious.

A friend of mine who is a Ford dealer in Europe has used what is now called SW ARX water based in his shop since 1999.I saw one last year that was painted over 10 years ago and it has held up very nicely.
The ARX water based paint is very nice stuff!
PPG has always been good quality also so IMHO it depends more on the prep and the guy painting it than the materials.

Thanks guys, we're going with the shop that uses PPG, even though the estimate is about 25% higher than the other shop.

Does anyone know if the water-based finishes are required in CA? If so, does anyone have experience with the PPG Envirobase line?

I believe water-based is required in CA. My neighbor does high-end restoration/paint and body and uses water based paint.
