What's happened to Shell? 4 years ago I drove west to CA I could hardly find a Shell station. Same thing happened last fall driving to Ohio from Texas. Hardly any Shell stations once we left Texas until we got into Ohio. A lot of their stations are ratty now.

Been using Shell for about 60 years. We use premium in our cars. Thinking about getting other gas cards so I don't have to search for a Shell out of town. Who else has a premium that will keep the sensors and cat clean?

What's with those "Top Tier" stickers on gas pumps?
 
The only other station that I know of that has close to the level of detergents as Shell premium is Costco. They have 5x the required amount of detergents in both of their grades. Shell has 6x the amount but only in their highest octane.

Esso, Exxon and Mobil talk about how good their Synergy formula is but it’s only 3x the required amount (and that is the level in their premium)

Google top tier Gas and read everything!
 
Shell is making a comeback here locally.
We had been without one for years, and then a brand new build that did not make it as a no name reopened, and has been successful as a Shell.
One of the local Marathons sold and converted to Shell last year.
Then a couple of weeks ago, the local Sunoco converted to Shell.
I tend to frequent them because they are price competitive and they take Kroger fuel points.
 
Now that you mention it all the shell stations in my area are gone now. For decades they were the most expensive gas around here. I get most of my gas at Costco these days. They have the Top Tier + stickers on the pumps on the ones that I've been to lately.
 
All over the place here. I like the one near my office where you can parlay a $.20/G discount for buying a carwash and the $.10/G Rewards.
 
That's all I use due to Kroger points and gas quality but I am in Houston so they are everywhere. Not a lot of people know they are a Dutch company though.
 
Concentration of brands varies by region, and stations will change. Here is southern Vermont, we have a strong presence of ExxonMobil, Shell, Sunoco, Citgo, and Irving Starting to see some Phillips66. And some Cumberland Farms, Stewarts, Gulf, and Penguin here and there

No presence of Chevron, BP/Amoco, Marathon, Union76 or Speedway, Loves, etc.
 
Regional thing. Most of this area's Valeros have closed. We have mostly Exxon/Mobil and Shell for big name here. I don't think there's a Chevron within 50 or 60 miles of me.

I must agree with "the Green Mountain Boy" because I've seen the same phenomena.

A $10 Texaco gift card arrived in the mail and after a search, I can tell you there were only 2 Texaco stations in NJ.
I called my aunt in Dallas and asked her if there were Texaco stations in Texas...there were, so she got the crard.
 
Funny that with motor oil - it’s always a formula - but gas? 5X is the echo chamber here …
The guy said he’s looking for a convenient alternative card - like maybe Chevron or Exxon - Costco is not likely handy …

Just check gas buddy on one of your normal trip routes - select a major brand based on what’s on your route …

Back in the day I would frequent places that participated in the Shell Rewards program. IIRC there was and probably still is a Shell station near you on Route 9 in West Brattleboro.

Also back in the day I would stop at a Shell station in Seabrook, NH on the way to Maine. I am not sure if that one is still there.

When Covid hit my son left his car unused with half a tank for six months and his tank rusted out. Since then I use only E0 in both my and my wife's car because they often go months between seeing a gas station. We are both still running on pre-war gas.
