Yep, that's the trick, finding the right person at the right level. Enough authority to answer, interest enough to care, but not loaded up with too many other far more important jobs to just let this question slide.

i would be surprised if it was. it takes a whole lot more than UOA to revise car maintenance requirements. not cost effective for toyota on cars they don't make anymore.
 
I would agree on the UOA part, obviously, but the engineers should have some idea whether or not a 5w-20 or 0w-20 would have sufficient HTHS. If we all bug them enough, we might find out the truth on this chart.

That strikes me as a really bad idea. If you are trying to save pennies, put any good 5W-30 in there. That Prius gas motor goes through massive numbers of start-stop cycles. 5W-40 is a poor choice.
