In years past there have been a number of posts discussing the "Toyota Oil Recommendation Chart" but the chart itself doesn't stay up for long.
If you Google it your should be able to quickly pull it up.

ah yes, the fake toyota oil chart.

I thought we didn't pay attention to charts, manuals, or any other information that weren't expressly US of A.

Has no one ever tried to confirm the veracity of the chart with Toyota Canada, or even a dealer service department in Canada? I suppose it could be fake, but it would be a rather bizarre choice of document to fake.

I don't think it is fake, though I suppose it could be. It is probably valid for somewhere.

One poster on ClubLexus says Toyota Canada sent him the chart (that chart has "Toyota Genuine Parts" but no date or country). (Thats the chart with colored dots)

There is another chart, dated April 2 2014 and Toyota Motor Sales USA that goes back to 2009 and list 2009 Prius (1nx-fxe) as 5W-30 Conventional only. It also list Yaris (1nx-fe) as 5W-30 Conventional only. It does list PriusC (1nx-fxe) 2011> as 0W-20.

Your grasp of hydrodynamics still surprises me even to this day.

As a denier of the fundamental process that heat is generated IN engine bearings, it's far too easy to form incorrect conclusions.

Bump...

For those with inquisitive minds...how does the crankshaft get hot if the oil is cooling the bearings ?

It would be rather nice if we had a date and intended target audience for the thing.

I've never disputed it, but we don't know if it's been superseded by something else, or anything like that.

I sent an e-mail to Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. yesterday with both charts attached asking them which if either was valid and if the Generation 2 Prius was officially back spec'ed to 0W-20.

So far I only have the acknowledgment with case number. I'll share whatever I get.

It probably won't even be the first time today. Maybe if they get irritated enough about it they will actually publish something on an official site.

That gives me an idea, and a business opportunity for Helen. She should sell us all email addressed with the domain of bobistheoilguy.com. All the oil and filter companies will be able to readily identify the "problem children" when it comes to lines of questioning.

here is one scenario. a dealership or a region decided to make some money selling lots of synthetic TGMO oil changes. inspired by a press release claiming that toyota is switching to 0w20 oils, they produced a chart featuring ow20 TGMO compatible with most everything.

now if any customer asks why expensive 0w20 when the oil cap say 5w30, they just show the "official" chart.

someone took a picture of the chart and put it in the email and the rest is the history (you know, CATERHAM using it as a gospel).

notice that the picture is never hosted on official toyota websites, but rather car discussion forums like this.

I do love a nice Moto Guzzi……...

It was spec'd for 20w-50 oil, yet I run 5w-40 Rotella and have for the last 180,000 miles. It's gonna blow any day now, for d_amn sure, just as my Prius will.

Oil is serious godd_amn bidness . . .

Nice Guzzi mate, thanks for sharing. Tell us the Billy Joel story….

In any case, if they let us know something useful, it would be nice.

They said, for what it is worth:

For the second generation Prius, model years 2004 through 2009, Toyota only recommends the use of 5W-30.

No comment on either of the charts, I suppose I could try calling them and trying to revisit it.

I suppose one can always try. One has to aim it at someone with a high enough pay grade to know what he's talking about, but low enough not to delegate it to someone who doesn't know, or ignore it altogether.

Well, I suppose the statement that they only recommend 5W-30 could be construed to invalidate the chart that says otherwise.

Who knows. I suppose it depends upon what kind of database they have in front of them, and how things are updated if and when there are backspecs. Personally, I'd be surprised if the vehicle wasn't backspeced, but that doesn't mean a whole lot.
