Shell Master Card

Just got my new card, replacing the old gas-only card. What you want to do is put the Shell app on your phone and have your credit card (if that's what you want) listed as method of payment. So when you are at a Shell station use the phone app to pay for gas.

Or you can just pre-pay for your gas at the counter - I would NEVER put any card into the gas pump slot.

  • Chip cards are less vulnerable to skimming than magnetic stripe cards, but they aren’t completely safe.
  • Crooks can still capture your card information from a chip card using a technique called shimming.
  • Shimming allows criminals to create fake credit cards with your card information.
It doesn't matter, credit cards are completely safe to you. Not completely safe to the credit card company since the hackers are stealing from them, not you.

If you want a way around this you can buy pre-paid gas cards at your grocery or wherever. They work at the respective pumps.

I keep a few in my car. I travel a lot and if I were to lose my wallet or whatever I could get home.

Do yourself a favor... Download the Shell app, get the Shell credit card and use that as your payment method in the app. Turn the pump on while you're still sitting in the car. You get gas rebates and you can track your spending through there.

This is what I do. In addition, Chase and Discover will run 5% points on gas stations at least one quarter per year, so I stock up on gift cards during those promotions. A Speedway gift card saved my behind one morning when I realized I'd left my wallet at home, but was able to use the gift card to get my coffee and then swing back by the house to get my wallet and head to work.

As for the OP, I get it and there are two stations near my house that seem to have an ongoing problem with pump card readers being compromised. I've stopped using those stations. The risk is on the issuer, not you, although there is the hassle involved if you do get hacked.
