So I have another question to ask, as I'm still learning. My car recommends 5w-40, but 5w30 is fine. Can I use 10w30? The viscosity @ 40c and 100c are right in between the values of 5w30 and 5w-40. The engine shouldn't have a problem pumping this at cold start on cold days right?

For specifics that I'm looking at:

MSS 5w30 and 10w30
Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40

Mobil 1 0w-40

A 2011 Hyundai recommends a 5W40? really? I would have thought a 5W20...in which case a 0W20 would do as well...

Why even ask the question? Why not use what is specified for the car when that grade is readily available in several brands?

You've got some great choices listed...so, really, why go with a viscosity that is not recommended by the manufacturer?

I would use the recommended viscosity...

I think I may have to put something in my sig so people won't have to ask the same question. Yes, for the turbo, Hyundai's manual recommends 5w-40. I'm asking just to expand my knowledge. I have 2 bottles of leftover Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 and may need to mix it with something for an oci. I know Mobil 1 0w-40 will be fine, but wanted to see if there are other choices.

I would not concerned about the lower number (5w vs 10w) in Southern California, it will pump the same.
I would be concerned about the upper range. Hyundai speced 5-40 for turbo protection.
Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 at 100C is 13.1 cst, Mobil 1 0w-40 is 13.5 cst, Mobil 1 10w30 is 10.5 cst.

If it were MY car I would stick with 5w-40 synthetic, for a turbo, but to answer your question, if you want to try 10w30, in your climate, it will not be any worse than 5w30.

OK - that helps me understand...a couple of things to keep in mind; the lower the first number, the faster it will circulate on cold start and the second number determines the rough viscosity at operating temp. So, if a 5W40 is called for, you can use a 5W40 or a 0W40, both will be about the same at operating temp...in So. Cal, either is fine...but the 10W30 will be a bit thin at operating temp...

If my car called for a 5W40 and it was a turbo, I would use only the 5W40 synthetic...Oh, wait...I have two turbo cars that call for a 5W30 unless driven in high heat, in which case, the use of a 5W40 is recommended...and that's exactly what's in them: Pennzoil Ultra 5W40 and Mobil 1 0W40...so you know what I would do if I owned your car...

I would stick with 5-40 to satisfy Hyundai warranty requirements-there's a boatload of them out there

no matter how warm it is there a 5w30 will have better start up protection than a 10/30 unless its 100c out side in which case your probably dead.

but i dont think it will blow up from runnin a 10/30. i agree with others tho, i would stick to a 5w40. Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 to be exact

5w30 is fine. That's actually what dealer uses. Was thinking of trying MSS but oh well. Sticking to 40wt it is.

If it calls for a 40 grade and you plan on using synthetic oil, I'd use Mobil 1 0W40. It is probably one of the best 40 grade oils out there, held in very high regard here on Bitog.
