Shame on mom!

changed my moms oil tonight ( 02 Mazda 626 4cyl.), and she did it again, went past her oci. I usually try to change it every 5,000miles, but this time she went 3,000miles over! I've always used Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, and normally wouldn't worry to much, but this thing only has a 3.5qt. capacity, and I've seen bigger oil filters on lawn mowers. It was some of the dirtiest looking stuff I've seen come out of a gas engine too. It was very dark, and had a redish tint to it. I'm hoping she didnt' do any damage. Unfortunately, I also had to give her the "good" news that the noise she heard when turning was her cv shafts. The outter boots on both shafts are split, and the right one clicks something fierce.

Oh, and last oil change, I had used a Napa Gold filter. This time I went with a Purolator Pureone, mainly for the grippy stuff, and filled it with Q-hp since walmart has it so cheap right now.

I know, but what good does shortening it do if she doesn't bother looking at the sticker I put in the upper left hand corner of her windshield?

I don't think 5,000miles is a problem for it, I even thought about stretching it out to 6,000, but I figure this will give some lee-way, since she usually winds up going over anyways. This time she just happened to go over fruther then she ever has.

8,000 miles on Pennzoil Platinum? I wouldn't worry about it, that 2.0L engine should not be too hard on the oil. Just tell yourself that you got your moneys worth of the oil. :2cents:

I myself wouldn't practice going that far over. After reading plenty of posts on bitog I would not fret over it too much. There is quite a few on here that practice 7500 mile intervals on synthetic and have had good results backed up with used oil analysis. Like you, I would freak out at first thought though.

That could work....at least it was synthetic....

Run Amsoil or Mobil 1 Extended Performance the next run. Amsoil EA filt Or Mobil filter.

8k on syn is nothing...my friend just went 15k on dino and he would still be running it if i hadnt changed it

My thinking was with that little, tiny filter it has, and it only holding 3.5qts. that that might have been to long on that oil.

8k is nothing for PP to handle, even with the small filter and capacity - those engines aren't hard on oil...you're getting worried over nothing!

While you have the car jacked up for the oil change, get Mom's cv axles replaced. clicking leads to breaking, breaking leads to mom stranded somewhere.

Well here is an example of why I only use Synthetic oil in the ladies daily drivers....your choice of using a syn oil was definitely worth the extra $$. But you can go 7500 easy on PP so I really doubt you have any issues. BTW, Mom always gets a pass on these issues.

Maybe you should treat your Mom like I treat my son, I call him and ask what the mileage is on his/my car, then tell him it's time for an oil change.

dont go too long on that axle/cv like that,it will eventually fail/fall out.what kind of vehicle is it anyway?

If mom is low on cash at the moment, you can purchase some quick boots for the CV's. While you are under the car changing the oil, slide the quick boots back and repack with grease. I got an extra year and a half out of a set of CV joints that way.
