Recently had a transmission exchange done. The ATF gun was labeled Spirax Dex/Merc III, but when I got my invoice it read "Service Pro Dex/Merc"....I brought this up to my advisor and he had told me that they had just switched from SOPUS to this Service pro. Anyone have any information on this fluid? Is it junk? I have a 2000 Taurus 3.0L and we all know how touchy the Trans can be on those.

They did this for cost.
In my opinion Service Pro is not the best quality oil. I priced hydraulic oil once for a large purchase of about 2000 gallons. IIRC they were about $3 cheaper per gallon than Shell Tellus. That tells me either I am getting ripped off or the ServicePro oil is no where as good. I went with Shell. I think their tests that they use on the website to show how good the oil is do not relate to real world performance. The most expensive portion of an oil (by weight) is the additives and I think their additives are not as good.

To keep this somewhat unbiased, I have seen UOAs on here using ServicePro and I was impressed. Here is a link.

I have read articles that a lot of these companies are switching to cheaper oils that do not meet API specs when used in bulk, but are fine for the retail side. If it were me, I would switch out the oil or at least get a sample from the transmission shop and have a VOA done to make sure it meets the Dexron/Mercon III specs.

While it may not be a super stout lube, it will do the job properly, nearly every service shop I get a look at inside the shop has service pro bulk tanks.

I have used their semi-syn oil in several cars. It goes on sale for $1.69/qt often here in MI at ACO hardware.
