serpentine belt change

I agree that the costs of a belt and a little time to install is worth doing at or before 100k miles. Why risk a broken belt, being stranded and risk underhood damage for such a cheap part? I'm glad Bill in Utah has 200k miles on his belt, he sure got his moneys worth - now change the darn thing.

Let me talk to the mechanic about it when he service is done. Perhaps I was mistaken about the 400 bills to change it out but I'm pretty sure it was what they wanted. If at worse I'll have someone else handle the job for me before the trip.

The 97 Ford F150 I used to own still had the original belt on it when I sold it.....189,000 miles on it.....no cracks....looked good.

Agreed! I've never heard of a belt snapping, but I do hear of worn belts slipping (squealing), but many times that ends up being a worn-out tensioner as well. Not saying they won't snap, for sure, but they seem to go MANY miles before wearing out. I've never had one fail by breaking, but I have replaced ones that had lost too much material to be serviceable.

That free Dayco tool is worth getting.

Push it to 100k, and then try to do it yourself. You'll save some coin and learn something good a long the way, if you haven't done this before.

I change my personal cars at 80- 100,000 miles, cheap piece of mind and I will never have to do it twice because I have never put 200k on a vehicle..
However at work in our fleet we never change them as PM usually what happens is an idler or pulley fails and the belt gets shredded. Never seen one actually break, but they can get changed because of noise sometimes.
