The forecast for the temp in Phoenix this Thursday might meet or exceed the current 115 F temp record for that date.

Here is a synopsis of the records broken in 2024. Enjoy.

Wonder if UHI has anything to do with these records. It would be interesting to see the siting of these temp trackers. Anthony Watts may have something to say.

I suspect the urbanization of the area has raised temperatures considerably. Pavement and buildings absorb more heat than desert. The amount of new construction in and around Phoenix has been amazing.

I would not do well living in AZ. Just too hot for my tastes. If it gets above 95 I feel like not being outside much at all and I am considered an outdoorsman as far as going fishing and hunting frequently. I love the outdoors and usually walk 10,000 steps per day and I could never do that outside in AZ in those hot temps.

Get out of the valley, and into the mountains, and the temperature drops quickly.

Lots of folks in Phoenix have a cabin in the mountains to escape the heat.

I just looked up Phoenix's elevation - 1086' (331 m). That's way lower that I expected - I thought it was more like Denver.

No wonder it's so hot there.

The official thermometer is supposed to be at Sky Harbor airport. I worked with a long time Phx resident who told me that at some point Phx officials thought the high temps were bad for business so they got the temp sensor moved up a pole 10 or 12 feet to get the reading down a few degrees.

Too close to the ground, and you’re not measuring air temperature, you’re measuring surface temperature.

Every meteorological station measures air values, like temperature, humidity, and velocity, well off the ground.

In fact, the official wind velocity is taken at a height of 10 meters.

"Yes, but it's a dry heat..." (sorry)

In response to "dry heat...", a comedian from Canada said, "A dry heat, yes, but choked with forest fire smoke and scorched animal fur."
The murmured reaction of the audience was less laughter and more painful moaning.

I have a coworker who just moved there. I was asking if the central AC can still drop the home to 75F, when it's 115F....he was saying yes at night the house can reach 75F (it's not 115F at that time). How hard does an HVAC work out there? It would take a LOT of work to start at 115F, and reach 75F, if it could even do that. Not possible with the way our AC is sized in the northeast.

At least it's not humid. All summer long we have 95/95 days: 95 degrees and 95% relative humidity. Sweaty, but we do have the Atlantic ocean to enjoy.
