Semi auto, vs wheel gun? Big bore? 9mm?

Yes, Skippy, really.
The same holds true for those morons that call any firearm "range toys". If you were properly trained in the use of firearms, the word toy would never be associated with any gun.
Dip..... abound.
It seems you're assuming that people are unable to give proper credit to the abilities of a firearm because of a nick name...

If you were properly trained, then a firearm by any name is respected. As far as "range toy", it's still in the name. If you're at the "range" then everyone is generally on the same page and firearms are very well respected. Those who are not are going to be complete knobs no matter the name you give the implement in their hand.

I find questions of this nature silly. What is "end of the world?". If its Pompeii with Vesuvius erupting, you probably want any gun that you can kill yourself with.

That being said, I live in a remote area with no local police, sparse coverage by State Police, who don't even respond to property crimes. I keep an AR-15 with a couple of loaded 20 round magazines, a CZ-75, and a Beretta Bobcat 22lr.

My wife, who feared loaded guns, always thought this was silly, until one dark night, at 11 pm, someone started pounding on our front door. It turned out to be a foolish second home neighbor whose phone was out of order, and needed to use a phone (for a frivolous reason).

He never knew I had the Beretta in my pocket, with my hand on it, as I answered the door.

AR-15 with high capacity magazines and a good variable power scope. Better to have something that can reach out far for multiple reasons.

One handgun to do it all?

Option One:
S&W 65 (K frame .357), 3" barrel, round butt, fixed sights.

Easy enough to conceal. Big enough to be able to shoot well. The fixed sights are durable.

If it is truly going to be a one gun for all situations, TK Customs can machine the cylinder to accept 9mm in moon clips, and still shoot .38/.357 Mag.

The grips could have a space milled out of their under sides to store a couple of clips in each one. Otherwise, I won't have them when needed.

I'm not firm on fixed sights, since I can see the utility of having adjustable sights on a multi-caliber gun. I'd go with a Bowen Rough Country rear sight then. A modification to allow changing front sights like a Ruger Redhawk might be the simplest durable "adjustable" sight.

Option Two:
1911, full size/5".
Slides/barrels in a variety of calibers. Or just a selection of barrels. Things start to get complicated here when it comes to ejector location and extractor selection, but it has been solved before.

Glock 19. The best selling handgun in the world with the most popular ammo. Ammo availability, parts availability, reliability. The Glock is the choice. You’ll be scrounging for everything, so, you‘re most likely to find Glock parts and 9mm.

In a non-TEOTWAWKI scenario, one gun to do it all? Well, the G19 is still tops, because I can conceal it (with some work) and still have a 15+1 9mm. Very shoot-able. Very reliable.

If I have a clearer definition of threat, I could tailor the handgun to that threat. Critters eating crops vs. bears would be very different choices, and in neither case would I grab the G19. Might be the Single Six with the .22 mag for the former, and a 10mm or .44 Mag for the latter. I am fortunate that I have a choice.

But, if I lived in a place where I could legally own just one - G19 again.

This is the only right answer, as far as I am concerned.

Glocks are probably the easiest pistol to take apart and reassemble. Though I am not a Glock expert.

I think some folks answered in................"well a handgun will get me to the safe.........but I would rather have my long gun" mode - AHEM Z-O-6
Channeling Jeff Cooper - who said the same things many, many years ago. A handgun is what you use to fight your way back to your rifle… or something like that.

If you already have your rifle, then you won't need your hand gun, unless you lose the rifle - why I went directly with the AR-15 option. ;) But if it could only be a hand gun, I'd go for (in order of first to last): 1) High capacity 9 mm, 2) 45 ACP or 3) .357 magnum revolver. At least 4-inch barrels. Assumption is plenty of ammo exists for all.
