Seems like Blends are on their way out....

I've been to quite a few different stores in the last few days..and these are some of the things I've noticed:

Blends are going quick: AAP, and a few indy stores unloading all of their Durablend, a few O'reily's dumping GTX/Syntec blend, Some Autozones sending back (strange?) their Kendall blends.


Better hope your car needs nothing thicker than a 5w30....I've never seen so many 10w30s, 10w40s on clearance.....


What are you guys noticing?

10w-30's used to be common when 5w30's were more specifically sheer-prone. Its less of an issue because of chemical improvements so why stock both anymore?

While true...Even the "thick minded" (pun intended) people at Wal Mart will be in for a surprise...saw some 10w30 clearance there too...

Syn-blends are disappearing because most of the SN dinos required for newer passenger cars are syn-blends - in order to meet the SN label.

SM started the change a half-dozen or-so years ago, as most 5w20 conventionals were forced to add synthetic, in order too meet the SM demands.

Do you have any evidence of that statement (that SN dinos are Syn-Blends) ? Please provide.....

I'll gladly run 10w30 in my cars. Not too big a deal in a desert summer. I'll hit my local stores and see how I do.

Or the newer ones like in the CP family of oils that are now 60% synthetic...

I've noticed the same clearance on Synthetic Blends since the end of the year. Valvoline DuraBlend and Kendall Synthetic Blend at AZ were discounted for awhile. Looks like Amazon is looking to unload a few also....they had a steal of a deal on Valvoline DuraBlend not too long ago.

Looks like a lot of stores just don't have the space for all the blended oils.....that's what a manager at AZ stated when I was buying the Kendall Synthetic Blend with Ti.

10w-30 oils seem to be history in most stores....they are on the clearance racks. Advance Auto had a clearance rack of Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic 10w30 for $4.95 a quart recently. It still looks like there are no takers.

If I go to the Mobil 1 site for their oil recommendations....they recommend 10w30 in EP or M1 synthetic....looks like they are pushing the 10w30 to get rid of it from inventory.....they must have quite a bit.

I usually like to make my own synthetic blends. That way I know just how much "synthetic" there actually is...

+1....I do the same. Even with oils that say they are a syntheic blend, I add a quart or two of synthetic from the same family.

I bet the 10w30 will have a longer life in high mileage oils since many older vehicles has 10w30 on the oil cap.

Synthetic blends cost as much as synthetics here. Why should I bother?

As well as some new 0W-20's coming out. C-P makes a syn-blend 0W-20 for Honda. There will be more of these, as folks search for a lower-cost options for vehicles calling for 0W-20.

Which is strange since I see few of those blends in store. (AC delco, QS, Pennzoil.....)

Wal-Mart now carries the Pennzoil Blend Dexos approved 5w30 oil for $4.57 a quart .
